My daughter is 33 years old, married 7 years with two children ages 4yrs. and 1 yr. She has recently undergone tests for symptoms of abdominal discomfort and severe pain in her sides. Her GYN determined that she has polycystic ovarian syndrome and she was told this can significanntly increase her risk of developing ovanrian cancer, which does not have the best cure rate as compared to other cancers. She also is at risk with this syndrome for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, all of which are in her personal family history. She has been told that the treatment for her condition is the use of birth control pills. She does not want to use birth control pills because she agrees with the magisterium’s view that contraception is contrary to God’s plan. She understands that she would not be taking the pills in order to prevent pregnancy, but would be taking them for a “legitimate” reason. The question is this: Because it has been proven that the use of the pill can cause many mini-abortions to occur over a women’s life time time while taking the pill ( and this is not known by most women taking the pill) she can not reconcile herself to taking the pill at all, to just, in her words," avoid the inconvienence of cancer while potentially killing life." So what exactly is the church’s teaching on this? How can an exception be justified just because the reason seems just when the chemistry can harm potentially developing life?
