Is it possible to think Evolution correct and remain Catholic?

Do you mean to suggest a '05 Mustang to be better than a '64?
Ok, I know the '64-1/2 is a classic, but *have you seen the '05?! *The car is absolutely gorgeous! I’ve never seen a car that’s actually made me drool before…

😃

Correct. Now, from a scientific perspective, how do you detect God?

Tim
You mean, how do we detect an immaterial, infinite being with finite, material instruments?

I have no idea… 🙂

You know, my first car was a '66. I have to agree with Mike - the new Mustangs are awesome!

Well, that is two posts in a row where we agree!

I think the beauty of Quantum Physics is that in a very real way one can see that there’s a reality outside of our own that we’ll never be able to “see” or understand by our own conventional means. It does not stand to reason, though, that this “other realm” is non-existant because we can’t perceive it or study it and that everything in the material, physical world is as it is because it is.
Mike,

Very well put!

I think the thread is dicussing two different but always paired issues…creation and Darwinism.
Evolution as taken place after the flood, after creation. Darwinism holds that all life on earth , even creation, was the product of chance only.
Creation has to do with what started everything while Darwinism has to do with what has happened since. The Origin of Species admits a higher creator then proceeds to explain how life has changed over time but it does not attempt to explain creation itself.
The Church views evolution occuring after God created the heavens and the earth. Darwinism maintains that is all happened as a giant cosmic accident.

Darwinism has nothing to do with creation, only with life.

Hi Tim,

Any Catholic should really get down pat the fundamental differences between Darwinism and Evolution as defined by the Catholic Church.

Darwinism has been generalized by the enemies of the Church to take in the formation of the entire universe - the basis of Darwinism being pure chance without intelligent design.

This understanding of the difference between Darwinism and Evolution should aid the Catholic when debating any point regarding the theory of evolution and the separate theory of Darwinism.

From the New Advent, the Catholic Encyclopedia:

newadvent.org/cathen/05654a.htm

"Haeckel, with other materialists, has enlarged this selection theory of Darwin’s into a philosophical world idea, by attempting to account for the whole evolution of the cosmos by means of the chance survival of the fittest."

Hello, Bobby.

I am familiar with the difference as defined by New Advent and the Church. The fact is is that Darwinism expresses descent with modification. That is specifically about life.

Are there those who lump biological evolution with cosmology and geology? Of course, but to be honest with you, that is typically done by those opposing evolution and/or don’t understand the difference. I have yet to see a scientist include, say, the Big Bang as part of evolution in a scientific sense.

Bobby A. Greene:
As long as all Catholics understand the difference between Darwinism and Evolution, and that the Catholic Church is against Darwinism but tolerates Evolution, then there should be no misunderstanding. Just don’t get the two confused.
I dont think any of the Roman Catholics on this thread have disagreed with this…but you keep stating it. Do we have to make it official…BOB A. GREENE is correct in his statement on Darwinism. Is that better. 😉

Hi Tim,

I’m sure you’ve had just as much experience debating with members of the political left and other materialists regarding evolution, and they do include the creation of the entire cosmos within Darwinism. It is that those atheistic materialists don’t understand that the Catholic Church distinguishes the difference between Darwinism and Evolution and lump the Christian/protestant definition of evolution into all their anti-theological arguments. This is usually the point where I get 'em for their ignorance on Catholic doctrine towards Charles Darwin and the theory of evolution. Atheists and materialists are great generalizers and like to lump all Christian opinion towards evolution into one large protestant version.

Oh no, this is not better, it is not the case at all. It should be BOBBY A. GREENE has brought out the Catholic Church’s statement on Darwinism via the Catholic Encyclopedia. This would be mo’ accurate. Thank you veddy much. 🙂

I once had the same discussion with a friend, and she came up with the following idea:
  1. God created the earth and all its beings
  2. With God, there is no notion of a time dimension
Therefore, God could have easily created all things, with some evolution allowed to be involved, as the mention of the 7 days is simply a means to enmable us to understand the order in which things were created.
At the moment, I’m only willing to buy half of the argument…
