Is it practical to debate about religion on non-Catholic forums?

I would say yes. I am not religious yet I am here. As long as everyone involved maintains some level of respect and politeness (ie not breaking down to ad hominem arguments) I think it can be healthy and both sides can gain insight into the other’s point of view or line of reasoning.
 
I would say not. I used to engage in such online debates a great deal, and was endlessly ridiculed and derided. Usually the opposing side preferred to ignore my points. It’s extremely tiring also, when you’re almost the only one defending your stand, literally you against the world xD

Anyway, both sides are quite emotionally charged…I know my beliefs, my Catholic faith, and that’s good enough for me. I recognize also that I’m not going to sway anyone over the internet, it’s a futile fight, really. However, if I am in an online conversation, and my beliefs are attacked, I will speak up and defend them. Otherwise, I’m done with online debates. 🙂
 
I go to look at what other people think. To weigh it against what I believe, but I don’t think it does much good to engage in debate. It’s been my experience that most people are not respectful or polite as freethinker points out. That said I do like learning about other people beliefs, it helps to challenge my own and test it for truth, since that’s what we are all searching for. So far it’s worked for me, but it’s a lot of work to sift through everything you find and fact check it…
 
Meh… I stumble upon religious debates on non-Catholic forums all the time. I don’t do it deliberately. Online there seems to be a HUGE amount of hatred for religion… it’s very disheartening. I try to show these people that you can be logical and reasonable and yet still believe in an ‘invisible’ God… something they have a hard time imagining. Most of the time I get into some interesting discussions mainly because people appreciate that I am being respectable despite all the hatred, scorn and nastiness thrown at me.

I don’t think I’ve ever changed a mind but I do think I’ve helped the fire of hatred dim just a little bit.

It’s weird to me how people will cry that religion makes you hateful and then they behave way more hatefully then any Christian. It’s … just weird.

Sure, why not? As long as the forum is open to debates. I post on the Religious Education Forum (religiousforums.com/forum/) which is open to discussions and debates between members. I like posting on forums like that because one position isn’t privileged over another as it is in forum spaces devoted to a single religion.

I think a lot of this has to do with the anonymity of the internet and the fact that you aren’t aware who you are dealing with. This forum is heavily moderated so you don’t see a whole lot of garbage on it.

I don’t think stupid/hateful comments on forums are unique to religious forums or positions at all. You can go on a forum about cars and easily find someone being called an ignorant fool because they prefer the Ford Mustang over the Chevrolet Camaro. A quick glance at another forum might give you insight into why someone must be a complete and utter moron because she prefers The Rolling Stones to The Beatles.

Something about the internet and the anonymity brings out the worst in people

This is true. I’ve seen it all over the place. I’ve seen it on Facebook, on the comments section of almost any random news article, and also on Atheists and Christian forums alike. Though I must admit, in my own experience, the caliber and intensity of the insults are greater in places where religion is not a factor. This website is moderated, but the topic of religion itself is usually fairly self regulating to an extent. That’s not to say that people from religious forums are all Saints who always speak charitably. Just that the level of degrading speech is usually not as severe. Just my personal experience there…
 
It really depends how you do it. If you want to go to some other forum and “convert the heathen” armed only with your rhetorical prowess and a fistful of links to Catholic Answers and the Vatican website, you’ll probably not make much headway.

However if, as Nicky so eloquently put it, you want to simply help “the fire of hatred dim just a little bit”, then I would say that could be beneficial. More than the arguments you articulate, people will take notice if you are responding to sarcasm and derision with genuine charity.

What about a situation in which a non-Catholic forum actively seeks a representative to defend Catholic perspectives or answer questions about Catholicism?

That’s because they are. Camaros are clearly superior to Mustangs. 😃

My experience has been the farther away one gets from mainstream “denominations”, the greater the vitreol directed at the Catholic Church and Catholics in general. I was on one for a while, some “non-denominational” site, and the “moderators” spewed the most bilious vile tripe that I’ve ever read.

My experience; not worth it.

Oh, I agree 100%. Everyone behaves badly online. I just have to laugh when people are behaving badly AND being complete hypocrites at the same time.

I try very hard to behave myself… even I have had moments where I’ve been quite snippy online but a word spoken in person disappears quickly but a word left online stays forever and I try to remember that always.
 
It’s eye-opening to find out just how varied beliefs are from Christians on non-Catholic Christan forums, pretty much all inspired by Scripture alone! But if you’re thick-skinned enough, I think we can plant seeds and often demonstrate the balanced and well-supported positions of Catholic teachings.
