Is it problematic for Laura Bush to speak at a Catholic parish?

Yes, it is problematic. A mistake is being made here that the “topic” (literacy) is the only thing that matters. Then why not have some unknown person speak on literacy? Why not have a devout Catholic speak on literacy? Why not have a Catholic educator speak on literacy?

Obviously literacy is NOT really the point of this talk, it’s “LAURA BUSH on Literacy” AND the funds it will raise for the school.

Laura Bush is an ADVOCATE, maybe not a “politician”, but clearly and outspokenly and forcefully and powerfully and influentially a very PUBLIC advocate for both Abortion and “Gay Rights” and has been widely known as such for many years. That disqualifies her to speak at a public function, plain and simple.

If LITERACY is really the issue they all care about, why does she need to speak at a Catholic site? Why not the YMCA, Town Hall, Rotary Club or other neutral territory?

Laura Bush is sweet, lady-like, gracious and a former first lady so no one likes the “vulgar” idea of kicking her out. But what if the wife of the president of the KKK wanted to give a talk on Literacy? The person and their values matter, and Laura’s are not Catholic, in fact, not even Christian. This never should have been arranged, now it will cause conflict and embarrassment to try to change it. Although if Laura were informed quietly by the pastor/bishop, I’m sure she would withdraw without a fuss due to the type of lady she is.
