If you can substantiate that she has positions contrary to Church teaching on the subject, then you should lobby to have her speaking engagement cancelled. And when (not if, but when) the pastor or parish council ignores you, you should set up picket lines and protest the appearance.
Laura Bush has been an advocate for literacy for many years as was Barbara Bush. I see nothing wrong if she speaks since this is the topic. The community might benefit from it. She would not be speaking as a religious figure.

Howerever, Whenever a person of any celebrity is given a pulpit to speak from, no matter what the topic, It is saying that not only do they have valid points here, but lend credence to other views they hold. That is why It is very important to measure what we say in the public forum.

I don’t think that it is problematic for her to speak about literacy. Granted, if everyone knew her stance on those issues, then there is certainly a case for scandal. But I would argue that her primary focus is literacy and she is not widely know for gay ‘marriage’ and abortion support.
This could be used as a way to evangelize the first lady and help bring her to truth. If we started barring people who support abortion and/or gay ‘marriage’, then we would have to turn a way a lot Catholics

Yes! She should be treated the same way.
Yes, it does matter! I think that it is inappropriate to use a spouse’s elected position as a platform to claim credibility for a personal agenda. For example, I think that Hillary Clinton has much more standing now because of her political roles than when she was just the wife of the POTUS and she was trying to push “her” health plan.
In that case, it would be ok for Hillary Clinton to speak at a Catholic Church. I can see working together with folks like this to achieve common interests, after all Mother Teresa worked with Mrs. Clinton on the occasional project. But she or Mrs. Bush speaking at a Catholic Church is just plain wrong.
