Is it problematic for Laura Bush to speak at a Catholic parish?

Why or why not? I ask because she stated in her recent book that she is in favor of gay marriage and (I think) abortion. She is speaking at a parish in our diocese later this month or next. She is speaking on literacy. Thanks.

If you can substantiate that she has positions contrary to Church teaching on the subject, then you should lobby to have her speaking engagement cancelled. And when (not if, but when) the pastor or parish council ignores you, you should set up picket lines and protest the appearance.

But before you do such a thing, you should make sure you have 100% proof, so as not to calumniate her.

Should the current President (whose pro-abortion and pro-homosexual ‘marriage’ positions are on record) have spoken at Notre Dame?

Or is this OP just another Bush-bashing?

Laura Bush has been an advocate for literacy for many years as was Barbara Bush. I see nothing wrong if she speaks since this is the topic. The community might benefit from it. She would not be speaking as a religious figure.

No, President Obama should not have spoken at ND and, to add insult to injury, be given an honorary degree. That’s why alums like me either withheld or redirected our contributions.

Our bishop gave the okay. The proceeds are going to a local Catholic school. I brought up the Obama/ND comparison and was told there is no comparison because Mrs. Bush is not a policy maker like Obama. Was also told the following USCCB letter doesn’t apply here because it is addressing only politicians. It appears that she does support both

I would have to ask why she is being asked to speak given her stance on these issues.
I don’t the first lady is being asked to address those items. This is about literacy.

I don’t think that it is problematic for her to speak about literacy. Granted, if everyone knew her stance on those issues, then there is certainly a case for scandal. But I would argue that her primary focus is literacy and she is not widely know for gay ‘marriage’ and abortion support.

This could be used as a way to evangelize the first lady and help bring her to truth. If we started barring people who support abortion and/or gay ‘marriage’, then we would have to turn a way a lot Catholics 😊! Instead we should treat them with Christ’s love and work and pray to help the Holy Spirit convert their hearts.

(muttering a short prayer that I didn’t make a spelling and or grammar error in a post about literacy)

My question stands.

But even is this is proven true, the others are correct—she’s not speaking as a policy-maker but on literacy.
you can watch the interview. I have alsways like Mrs. Bush. Howerever, Whenever a person of any celebrity is given a pulpit to speak from, no matter what the topic, It is saying that not only do they have valid points here, but lend credence to other views they hold. That is why It is very important to measure what we say in the public forum.

Forgive my skepticism, but far too many times we have had (and still do):

(What a person living in Vatican City said): “I deplore the violence in the middle east.”

(What the media reports): POPE CONDEMNS ISRAEL.

I wonder if the same charitable stance would be taken with Michelle Obama or once our current president is no longer president and wants to have a talk on education.

Has Michelle Obama been working on literacy projects for the last decade? Was she a teacher?

Laura Bush has been doing this on her own merits for the longest time before the presidency.

The point is not about qualification. The point is on any stances she has that is antithetical to Catholic teaching right?

Personally, I can generally be against someone’s beliefs but still appreciate the works they are doing that is worthy. But that’s just me.

Say that she was. Would the same charitable stance be extended to Michelle?..
Yes! She should be treated the same way.
…Why does that matter?
Yes, it does matter! I think that it is inappropriate to use a spouse’s elected position as a platform to claim credibility for a personal agenda. For example, I think that Hillary Clinton has much more standing now because of her political roles than when she was just the wife of the POTUS and she was trying to push “her” health plan.

In that case, it would be ok for Hillary Clinton to speak at a Catholic Church. I can see working together with folks like this to achieve common interests, after all Mother Teresa worked with Mrs. Clinton on the occasional project. But she or Mrs. Bush speaking at a Catholic Church is just plain wrong.
