Is it proper to ask a priest if he can feel or know the actual change occuring at the moment of transubstantiation? I’m just wondering what it feels like at that moment in time for the priest who is holding the sacred body and blood of our Lord Jesus.

Hi DianaD

As a priest, I think it is entirely reasonable to ask. For me, a great sense of the mystery is there whenever I pronounce the words of consecration. It is an awe-inspiring and profoundly moving experience. It is deeply humbling to realise that a person like me has been given the incredible dignity of being able to offer the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ to our Father. Phew! Even when I’m exhausted or have a splitting headache, I always try to pause and recollect myself. To stop and consider what is really happening can lead to a great entering into the mystery.

Hope this helps, God bless you,

Fr Matt

Fr. Matt,

Thanks for your reply, I have found myself wondering the same question posed here. My vocation is wife and mother and I have so much respect for the priesthood, thank you for the brave and devout life you live for Christ and His Church!🙂

Peace Be With You

Father, let me add my thanks to all the rest! I had a small glimpse of this myself: a few months ago, I saw “The Passion” on a Saturday night, having gone to Mass earlier that evening, and I didn’t receive the Eucharist again until the following weekend in a city far from home. My hand started to shake when the Blessed Sacrament was placed in it, and tears were smarting in my eyes. It must have been the first time this lazy, lukewarm cradle Catholic really understood what you priests do all the time.

In response to the original question, I would say that most priests would be happy to tell you about something so wonderful.

Our priest has stated that his fingers tingle at the words of the consecration. I believe him. He is a very inspiring and sincere priest. He says the eucharistic prayer very reverently. Not like I have ever heard.
