Is it putting myself in a near occasion of sin to work in a video rental store?

All seem to put some movies that are not right for kids in a kid’s line of sight. Even some family movies have themes of a divorcee parent convincing their child to accept the “new spouse/father or mother.” Public libraries have those and bad books purchased and somebody’s got to do it. It seems about every job involves handling immoral things and getting them to people. What do you do about that?

Working in a book store, library, or video store is not intrinsinctly evil. I work for a construction company and they may or may not overcharge clients, do sub-standard work, or a number of uncharitable actions. But my working there and giving of my skills does not promote evil. Markets sell tabloids and drugstores sell birth control but just working at those establisments does not make one culpable of any sin. We can override such evil by our example and love.

Parents need to have an open communication with their children and be the stewards that God called them to be. Everything that we deal with starts in the home. parents need to know what their children are doing and what they are reading. Yes, evil is everywhere for the most part but our conscience and our actions is all we have to conquer this mess… That’s my two cents… teachccd

Can’t you construct sentences properly? I don’t want to fill in the blanks.

And no, working in a video rental store is not immoral. If that were the case, then working in a hardware store would also be immoral, what if someone bought that axe to hack someone? Or that rope to hang themselves?

If you don’t want to fill in the blanks, then don’t answer the question!

My friend, don’t worry about it-feel free to work in a video store, but since they’re closing up all over the place-keep it as temporary employment.

I understand your conundrum very well. I work in a large law firm, and I am certain that some of the lawyers engage in practices that fall outside the boundaries of morality. I believe that God places us in the midst of unbelievers to be witnesses and examples. Pope Benedict admonishes us to “emanate a fragrance of holiness” to everyone around us. Think of Joseph, serving the household of an Egyptian Pharaoh for so many years, and Daniel, a captive of the Babylonian King. God performed an important work through them, specifically because they were in those particular places. Think of the story of Naaman in 2 Kings chapter 5, who was healed of his leprosy by Elisha. Naaman was an army commander in a pagan land, and he explained that although he worshipped Elisha’s God (rather than the gods of his land), his master (the king) would lean on Naaman’s arm when he went into the pagan temple to pray. Naaman explained his difficulty to Elisha and asked for pardon.

"But may the Lord pardon your servant on one count: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, leaning on my arm, and I bow down in the house of Rimmon, when I do bow down in the house of Rimmon, may the Lord pardon your servant on this one count.” (2 Ki 5:18-19).

I view my job as a vocation, and every morning I pray earnestly that I will be used as a silent example of holiness and faithfulness in the work that I do, humble though it may be. Perhaps God has placed you in your specific job to be an encouragement to a fellow worker or customer who is having doubts about their faith.

Who did not use grammar correctly?

Thanks to those who answered!

I’ll miss the person to person nature of video rental places, as I’m not too smooth with torrents and such, I don’t know if digital downloads have the extras (Redbox doesn’t, when extra discs are involves) and most don’t have a device to connect their computer image to a bigger screened TV, but not the immodest images kids can look at or the availability of porn that was in small video rental places.
