Is it really possible to raise a devout family in the ever-intolerant secular world?

Having read about the Pope’s visit to Lebanon on huffington post, I stupidly read through the hundreds of comments, there meeting the sheer hatred many people feel towards the Church, Christianity and sometimes religion generally. With the increasing spread of this attitude, do you believe it’s possible for young Catholic parents right now to raise their children to be good Catholic believers? Their church is very much despised and hated by many who think that education = rejection of religion, and increasingly so. That was a very sobering read. 😦

I am not going to dismiss the real animosity that exists towards religion in this world, but reading the comments section of ANY internet article is usually an exercise in “breaking down anyone’s spirit”.

There are people who are very brave when they are anonymous on the internet who see their mission in life to attack any article just because they can. If there was an article that came out that said “All Cancer Cured”, they would complain that it was not cardiac disease.
So, consider the source. I hate to give in to stereotypes but most these people are living in their parents’ basement or attic, have cheetos stains on their fingertips, and can’t interact with the real world (face to face) on a daily basis.😉

Rest assured, there are many people in this world who ARE living lives devoted to Our Lord and amid the struggles of life are raising families of faith and are examples for all of us. They are here and they are in your parish

Yeah All veils of civility disappear when anonymity is involved. You should also remember that the Huffington Post has a strong liberal bias so you should not expect the greatest religious discussion on that site.

Spot on. It doesn’t even have to be a religious article for people (“haters”) to denegrate anyone of faith, let alone Catholics. It can be very depressing and all the more reason to be cheerful and welcoming to those families of faith and especially the little ones. 🙂

Yes - All things are possible with God…

With God, all things are possible.

It is possibke but far more challenging than ever before. Just look at the last DNC convention, it was largely about abortion and homosexual marriage. Even are fellow catholic were on stage espousing these beliefs in front of millions on TV.

Get a copy of Kingdoms and Converts, excellent read for the lay historian - The Church pulled the world out of widespread spirtual darkness once and it can do it again, God willing.

Yes it is possible to do it, but one family at a time beginning with yours.

Mother Teresa was told by someone that they had a loaf of bread. And then they said to her,
“but what good is one loaf of bread among so many who are starving in the world?”
Mother Teresa replied, “At least their will be one less hungry person in the world.”

Say the rosary as a family every evening after dinner together. This is concrete and possible.

Just a thought.

It is absolutely possible. It does take time and effort you your part as the parent. You need to have the devotion and piety you expect to see in your children.

If you want them to pray, you need to pray. And they need to see you doing it and know that you pray more than just hearing them say “Now I lay me…”

If you want them to dress modestly and not watch junk on TV, you need to dress modestly and stop watch cable TV trainwrecks - even after they go to bed.

Go to Mass every week, even on vacation. Help out with their CCD and do a little Bible study yourself, don’t just drop them off and then go out for coffee.

I will be praying for your family.
