I’m Catholic and I like the taste of the communion we receive at mass. I’m wondering if it is sacrilegious to eat unblessed communion wafers at home as a sort of snack. I know that the wafer has not gone through the process of transubstantiation, but I’m not sure if its sacrilegious or not since the wafer was created to be used during communion and I would be depriving wafers of becoming the body of Christ.

Thank you.

I wouldn’t say that it is technically sacrilegious since the objects have not been blessed in any way and you are not intending to be disrespectful. However I would say that its quite imprudent. You could cause scandal to someone who sees it and doesn’t know that they are not consecrated. Even if I dropped an unconsecrated host on the floor I always consume it rather than throw it away just in case someone spots it in the trash and thinks its a consecrated host.
I would also find it imprudent since such hosts are produced with the intention that they’ll be used for Mass and it would seem, to me anyways, to be disrespectful.
