Is it sinful to discard moldy bread?

If you throw away bread that is beginning to get mold on it, are you being wasteful of food and is that something that needs to be confessed?
You’ve got to be kidding, is this a serious question? Maybe you are suffering scrupulosity?

IMHO it would be a sin to eat moldy bread! I sometimes recall the Salem witch trials in which people ate bread made with moldy rye and had ergot poisoning and hallucinations, causing the townspeople to accuse certain folk of witchcraft and devil worshipping.

I don’t even feed moldy bread to birds. It is thrown away. I usually have bread left over every week, before it gets moldy and bad I stick it in the oven for a few min to dry it out, crumble it into pieces and keep it in plastic bags. It is then given to birds around my area. Since we use multi grain bread they are really getting a treat.
According to my son, who is a history major, the witch trials were a way to confiscate land from widows, who were accused of witchcraft, executed, and their lands conveniently taken by the authorities. They were a way to oppress women, and further enrich influential people in the community.

I keep the whole loaf in the freezer, and just pick off slices as I need them. As long as you’re not leaving it in there for months on end (and as long as it’s well-wrapped), the freezer compartment will keep it fresher than the refrigerator.

I also freeze bread. If I do get moldy bread I will feed it to my poultry. But I don’t think you need to confess wasting food, that is a ridiculous waste of the time of a busy priest. These kinds of worries are evident of scrupulousity. Better to quit wasting time on the internet, that is a more serious waste of time and actually I have confessed it more than once myself.

It’s funny what people will focus on.

It is not a mortal sin- or a sin at all. It isn’t even being wasteful, because it has gone bad. I throw away about a third of a loaf of bread practically every week, because I can’t eat any more than that before it starts to get moldy.

Some day I think I am going to see a post that reads …
“If you put a piece of cheese on a mouse trap and a mouse doesn’t eat it, is it a sin to let the cheese go to waste?”
I’m sorry, but if feeling guilty or worrying if letting moldy bread going to waste leaves your mind heavy, I honestly hope you never have anything serious to worry about. My prayers are with you.

I concur…
