Is it sinful to not alert of wrongdoing to the one you wronged?

This is probably a bit weird of a question but I want to learn more about morality. So the wording of the title may be weird but my question is let’s say that you wronged someone but they dont know you wrong them. An example (a teen accidently scratches his gtandmas table and doesnt tell his grandma, and she doesnt notice.) (you eat your coworker cake and she doesn’t notice). Now obviously what you did could be sinful, but would it be a sin to not tell them you wronged them by accident or on purpose or would it only be a sin if they ask you and you lie(but I aint saying that they are planning on lying if asked though) also would it be a grave act or would that depend on the situation.

You know, I have seen those exact situations. I will say, though, that the more settled and mature a person is—the more at peace he is, and the more he wishes to avoid drama—the less likelihood that he’ll mention a wrong, even though he is definitely aware of it.

If someone has accidentally (or purposefully) damaged something of a relative, I think it would be better to own up and beg forgiveness. Offer to mend or pay for mending the item, or do yard work or clean the garage. However, some relatives are mean, or toxic, or make a mountain out of a molehill, and hash and rehash for years. In that case, if you did damage deliberately, confess the sin to your priest, do your penance, and make amends by doing several nice things for them.

For the co-worker example? With today’s nasty environment, zip your lips at work, but go to confession. One doesn’t eat a co-worker’s cake by accident! Do your penance and give a goodie to your co-worker a few times.

Proverbs says we should make restitution sevenfold, so be generous with your amends.

I am just someone who’s lived awhile. Talk to a priest. “Grave or not grave” seems to me to be so much pussyfooting around the issues. I still think in terms of mortal and venial sins, so I’m not the one to ask—but these named issues don’t register as mortal or grave in my estimation.

Anytime—ANYTIME—you have sin involved, please talk to a priest. He’s the best source of information for you, and only he can wipe away your sins in confession. Best wishes to you. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

No, but somebody may think a cake was intended for sharing and only realized it wasn’t after eating some.

Lol! One time i baked a sheet cake the size of a 1/2 sheet cake that you’d buy at a bakery, roughly 18” x 36,” and actually spent around 3 hrs decorating it.

We were honoring one of our coworkers, but for some reason, the supervisor couldn’t let us have any “free” time, as usual, but only our 15-minute break.

To expedite matters, I took pictures of the cake, then carefully cut it into large sizes. After each cut with the knife, I scraped all the acquired frosting onto a paper plate. Yum-yum! Since I’d made the cake, I had no reticence about scooping off a big hunk of the frosting from the plate.

Right after I plopped it into my mouth, a gal who had a bit of difficulty discerning situations came up and oohed and ahed over the cake as I went to wash the utensils. Upon my return, a piece of cake from near the center, bearing a frosting balloon, was totally missing. I looked around, and there was the slow discerner chomping away.

A bit miffed (to say the least), I asked why she hadn’t waited until the honoree arrived. She looked surprised and said that she’d seen me eating a piece—yet her piece was the only one missing. I asked the supervisor to send the girl on an errand, and a couple minutes later everyone gathered around the cake. The missing cake made sense since she’d been sent on an errand and we only had 15 minutes. No one found out and she was saved any embarrassment, but I sort of slap-dashed the frosting on future cakes. No more “masterpieces!” 😉
