Is it sinful to purposely watch bad tv shows?

It’s not just TV either. I took my grandmother to the local community theatre for what I thought would be wholesome fun the elder generation could enjoy. The plays were full of murder, witchcraft, sex, incest, young girls wishing she could lose her virginity, and sexual puns and jokes abound. I was appalled.

Whomever that Shakespeare guy was, he had a dirty dirty mind.
least he did not show open disdain for everything we believe in. course you are agnostic so I don’t know if you believe in anything. I would not dream of speaking for yourself only people who think as we do.

I really should clear that religion field. It leads to so many uncharitable responses. Being that I admit being agnostic, though, you should know that I don’t know what I believe - I call it a quest for truth. But that’s neither here nor there.

As for my post, I was trying to illustrate a point with a bit of humor. It seems to have misfires, and for that I apologize. I’ll try to more clearly articulate my thoughts.
I certainly wasn’t trying to disdeign or mock anyone or thing.

All art strives to heighten the audiences sense of awareness. Obviously some pieces do this better than others. For instance, the movie “Life is Beautiful” is both hert-warming and terrifying - hilarious and disturbing. It tells a story, shows some touching insight into the connections within a family, and I can’t think of a better example of a story that explores a father’s love for his son. All set during the Holocaust. It’s that last part that would make me hesitate letting a little child watch it in spite of what I consider so many good qualities.

It is that horrible setting that makes the story all the more moving, and the catharsis all the more powerful. “The Passion of the Christ” showed grisley, horriblcees of torture - to the point of making many people physically ill to watch it. But thatb unapologetic violence is both instrumental to the narrative, and puts the audience through a roller coaster of thoughts and emotions leading to the climax. The audience would miss out on something if they were spared these sights.

Now I can’t comment on the works the OP mentioned. And I grant that television isn’t quite at the same story-telling level that film is. But it’s going to fall on each individual person to judge whether a work of art and what it depicts is being presented for a sound reason and purpose. And if one starts to lay down what is “good” and what is “bad” for us to see outside the context of what we are seeing - just broadly painting sex and violence and baud as “bad”, then masterpieces like the body of Shakespeare’s work would be deemed bad. I’m sure we are all at different levels with regard to what we can handle to be shown physically, emotionally and if you will allow a lowly agnostic to say it, spiritually.

Maybe my opinion doesn’t help or address the OP. Its just my first thoughts whenever art media is discussed.

One more thing…God created us in his image…naked. Nudity and sex are natural. Even if the church condemns it. Surely God is shaking His head. Marriage came way after creation. Sex is NATURAL. Stop making it evil. That’s just what Satan wants…we as humans fall so badly into this awful trap of guilt. God is Good. So is sex. It’s where we are created by God.
Your understanding of the Church’s position on sex/nudity is highly inaccurate. 😦

This teaching of the church leaves out the natural process of procreation as an instinct outside of a marriage. The act of sexual intercourse is in itself a natural urge and is not meant to be dictated by marriage before it occurs. This is where the church has it wrong.
Sex before marriage should not be considered a sin. It is a natural instinctual action when two of a species are attracted to each other. This particular teaching of the Church gest in the way of God’s Divine Plan by assuming the Church knows better what we need. Rather than our own natural God given instincts.

Really??

When I’m mad at people, I have a natural instinct to hit them… or at least to yell and throw a fit. Doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

On a more extreme level, people who suffer from pedophilia have a natural instinct to get with children… doesn’t make it moral to do so.

Anyway, with that being said, I don’t think it’s a sin to watch any TV shows… unless you make it a sin.

But besides that, I don’t think it’s sinful to watch a show where people are going to act out things that our Catholic faith is morally against. It may be a bad influence if we’re vulnerable and don’t have a good/strong head on our shoulders to remind us what our beliefs are and that they differ from those of the characters on TV, but otherwise I don’t consider it sinful at all.

I hope not…Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory are my two favorite shows!!
I’m sorry to hear that. 2 1/2 Men is one of the most offensive shows out there, I believe. What are the redeeming qualities of that show? Are there any? 🤷

I don’t like 2 1/2 men either, but I’m not about to start putting down anyone who does.

As for why the poster likes that show? Well, it’s supposed to be a comedy. So he probably likes it because he thinks it’s funny.

Well, I don’t have to explain myself to you, but I will. First off, none of the characters on 2.5 men are, or are supposed to be, likable people. Charlie is a drunken misogynist. Alan is a neurotic loser. Jake is lazy and unambitious. Evelyn is a superficial narcissist. Berta is a white trash wisecracker. Yes, sex is alluded to on the show. And yes, it usually meets with disastrous consequences. Whenever a character does something immoral, it usually comes back to bite them in the butt.

But I am now going to reveal something to you all that may shock you into the next century.

This is a big thing, so I am going to ask you all to take a deep breath.

Now, take a drink of water.

Now, take another deep breath.

Okay…are you ready for the big news? Here it is…

I DO NOT LOOK TO FICTIONAL TV SHOWS FOR EXAMPLES OF HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE!!!

Yes…between pursuing my MBA, working 30 hours a week, taking care of my 82-year-old grandfather, doing the household cooking so my mother can go to Zumba for her health, taking my father to his doctor’s appointments, and going to Mass on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, I watch an occasional episode of Two and a Half Men or Big Bang Theory. I also (gasp) have a couple beers on occasion. News flash to CAF—everyday life is stressful, and sometimes real humans need some relaxation in their lives…which at times may include an absurd sitcom that gives you a laugh. Watching Charlie Sheen seduce a girl on 2.5 Men isn’t going to make me sprint to the bar and look for girls to have sex with…just as watching CSI isn’t going to make me go out and commit murder!!

Two and a half men that’s about homosexuality don’t encourage them.
2.5 Men has nothing to do with homosexuality. It is about a guy whose wife threw him out of the house who then had to go live with his brother. The divorced guy had a young son…hence the title, Two and a Half Men.
Big Bang Theory that was the theory of a catholic priest lamathra verified by hubble and Einstein, about how the universe was made in a single moment out of nothing.
The show “The Big Bang Theory” has nothing to do with the actual theory. It is about four socially awkward, nerdy scientists.

Since your verbose but ignorant post proved you have never watched either one of these shows and know nothing about them, it is fair to say your credibility on the subject is questionable?
