Is it true that cremains are to be buried immediately?

My husband died almost six years ago and he was cremated as he wished. I have kept his ashes. I had planned on being cremated too and had mentioned to friends I wanted our ashes sprinkled together at our favorite vacation spot. On EWTN the other day, the priest said that if you were cremated that your ashes should be placed in the ground immediately. Is this true? I really need to know.
