Just an example of a question. Would you have to be Ukrainian to join a Ukrainian Catholic Church? Even if you couldn’t join it, I assume that any Catholic could participate in the Divine Liturgy and receive Sacraments there. Just a hypothetical question.

No, I used to go to a UGCC. My spiritual director was just some regular American guy who entered the Church (married a Ukrainian woman) and was ordained. So, he is not only a married priest, but he also has no Ukrainian blood in him at all.

So, go join the UGCC, the Melkites, the Maronites, the Chaldeans, the Syro-Malabarese, the Syro-Malankarese, the Syriacs, the Romainans, the Ruthenians, whomever you feel most drawn to.

Caveat: I’ve read your posts, don’t run away from the Novus Ordo, that’s not a good reason to apply for a change of Sui Juris Churches. Don’t expect them to start pre-Liturgy rosaries, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, or the Divine Mercy Devotions; these are Western Devotions and to expect them would be a forced Latinization. (No need to beat that dead horse.)

I understand. I was just wondering. As it is, I don’t think I would be able to. I only have a couple of Eastern Catholic Churches in my area.
  • 1 Ruthenian Catholic (14 Minutes)
  • 1 Maronite Catholic (24 Minutes)
  • 1 Ukrainian Catholic (23 Minutes)
  • 1 Russian Catholic (Congregation Only) (20 Minutes)
  • 1 Ethiopian Coptic Catholic (Congregation Only) (19 Minutes)
Now the problem is the Ruthenian parish is extremely small, the entire congregation is only about 50 people. The Ukrainian one has the Divine Liturgy in only Ukrainian. The Maronite I don’t know. The other two don’t even have parishes and use other Roman Catholic parishes. I still want to keep my options open for Confirmation. 🤷

Sounds like you shouldn’t forget Latin parishes quite yet 😉
lol I know sorry I can’t spell it. I mean Carismation.😊 😊 I know, I just want to find out what is best for me.

Hi Holdencaulfield, did you mean Chrismatian ? Since you are in the discerning period between East and West Im sure the small Ruthenian parish would greatly benefit from having another memb er. There are lots of benefits to being in a small parish, the priest might actually be able to know the members of the parish. But really, size of the parish shouldnt be a consideration when it pertains to which spiritualiuty you feel most comfortable with.

You can either go to the small Ruthenian parish (especially since it’s closer) and reap the benefits of a small parish. The Ruthenian parish I went to was very small, it only had about 20 people there each Sunday.

The Maronites, probably, will have Liturgy in English. I write probably, don’t hold me to it.

If you wish to go to the Ukrainian parish, well, you’ll have to learn Liturgical Ukrainian.

Khrystos Voskres!

Voistinu Voskres!

Blahoslovy!

Mnohaja Lita!

Etc…

Guess where I used to go… 😉

Your last option is to go to the others that use the Latin Churches. Which one do you most feel comfortable in? Which one speaks to your heart?

I will have to see. I don’t think that I would feel very comfortable in the Ethiopian Coptic Catholic parish, maybe I will try the Maronite and Russian parish, however they are very far away, to much time on the high way, not enough gasoline.

I feel your pain. I lived in a northeastern suburb and the Ruthenian Church was diametrically opposite from my house. I had to drive on the beltway all the way around the city for 40 minutes every week. I still went though. Go where The Holy Ghost is leading you, but test every spirit.

Thank You. I quite agree.

You are so fortunate to have that many Eastern Catholic parishes around! The closest one to me other than the Maronite parish in our town (which we are more than blessed to have) is about 3 hours away.

Was that directed at me? I didn’t think that was that many. I’m sure some cities have a ton.

We have families that attend my church who drive 90 minutes each way to make it to Divine Liturgy.

We have one lady, in her late 70’s who used to ride the bus across the city, making 2 transfers and then would ride the bus home again just to come to Divine Liturgy and this was with a walker… now, when she is physically able to attend, her daughter brings her…

Wow, what type of Catholic are you again?

You are truly blessed as when I have the desire to attend a Divine Liturgy of and Eastern Catholic Church there is one a 115 mile away. thats the closes to me.

I’m sorry. I had no idea. You see I’m a teen and don’t have much money, so anything that is remotely far away is expensive for me. Even the closed Roman Catholic parish to me is around 15 minutes. However I am lucky to live in a large Diocese with 5 Eastern Catholic parishes.

I understand no need to apologize. Until recently I did not know there where many Eastern Catholic Churches in American at all. An I’m a old fuddy duddy 😃 42 so you see that how we learn i by talking with others.

holdencaulfield Just remember I looking for the parish the It does not matter if it is a Eastern or Western Church, It is the Holy Apostolic Catholic Church. I love going to The Divine Liturgy when I have the chance, But my culture is western and I do feel more at home in the Mass of the Latin Church.

Cleveland, Chicago, NYC, LA, Detroit, Philly, and Pittsburgh are the only ones that come to mind.

Indianapolis has only one.

St. Louis only has 2 (and one mission.)

KC has 1 or 2, ask Fr. Deacon Randy (DIAK.)

Omaha has 1

Lincoln, NE has 1

St. Pete/Tampa/Clearwater has 3?

Those are the only ones I can think of.

There aren’t many choices for Eastern Catholics in the USA.

In Canada you’d probably have a better chance of finding an Eastern Church.
