Is it truly possible to respect a religion you don't believe in?

Yes šŸ™‚ - though not all religions deserve respect. Respecting something does not necessarily imply liking it, or agreeing with it, let alone believing it.

Why should respecting what we don’t believe be difficult ?
maybe I liken respecting it…with advocating it.

Well, I find that I respect some religions that I do not believe in, but not all of them. I judge them on their own merits, and fruits.

And, to some degree, I respec the ones that support the things I believe in, even if they do so under a different guise, so that is rather like respecting the parts that are the same as mine. But it is not limited to that.

I can see truth and beauty and purpose in some beliefs and practices in other faiths even if they are not a part of my faith and practice.

hi cheddar–that’s a good way of putting it. I would say that I respect some parts that are agreement with the RCC–the basic tenets of being a Christian…and I always respect people who seem to have the Holy Spirit flowing from them…whether they be Catholic or not. I have muslim friends who I dearly respect their deep prayer life, although, I don’t necessarily respect their lack of belief in Christ not being crucified. I heard recently that we should actually not concentrate on those things that separate us…but concentrate on those things that bring us together. That was a great statement, I thought.

I would have a hard time telling someone who disbelieves in Christ’s death as attonement for sin–as respecting that. I might sayā€¦ā€˜I understand your thoughts on that, but not respect.’ Hope that makes sense.🤷

let me add a disclaimer…I respect non Catholics as much as non Catholics…I don’t always respect their beliefs. Ok…just making that point.šŸ™‚

Some faiths permit its members to have abortion. So in some cases I can’t respect their faith.

Anyway yeah, it is just a PC thing that has infested Western culture like some kind of strange disease… I mean, this ā€œrespect all religionsā€ thing. It is possible to tolerate some other religions, but IMO this doesn’t mean you have to ā€œrespectā€ them.

Which is, I suppose, all fine and good right up until I decide that I have no respect for Catholicism, at which point I become a bigot; or until I decide that I cannot tolerate Catholicism, at which point I become a monstrous persecutor of the faith.

How is your treatment of other religions any different? Have you forgotten the whole ā€˜do unto others’ part of Jesus’ teachings?

The bold part pretty much directly contradicts what I just said.

Overall, I respect most other faiths. I have a high regard for Islam (inspite of what some of their more extremist members do). I still look in a good way at Protestantism (even the Evangelical, anti-Catholic ones). I have a very high regard for Buddhists. As I always say, we can disagree without being disagreeable; I might not agree with certain aspects of their faith, but I still maintain my respect and regard for them.

Nope, it’s the exact same thing. You said you could tolerate some religions. So there are some you cannot tolerate; yet if I thought that way and decided Catholicism falls into the latter category, I’ve no doubt you’d be calling for my metaphorical head!

Well, off the top of my head the ancient Aztec religion called for regular human sacrifice and for over 1300 years up til the present Islam has taught that apostates must be put to death… I suppose you would ā€œtolerateā€ this kind of thing? After all, these are actual religions I speak of here.

Oh, would I now? That’s news to me… but who am I to argue as you obviously know me better than I know myself.

I’ll settle for tolerate.I don’t care if most people respect my beliefs, as long as they allow me to have and practice them.

hi blacktiger–actually…the question is…can you respect a religion if you don’t follow it? Not the people following that faith–but the actual faith. Like, can you respect a religion that lacks Christ? Can we respect a religion that doesn’t show Christ as the Messiah? This is more along the lines of where I was heading with my question. Now…what say you?šŸ™‚
If you don’t respect the beliefs, then you aren’trespecting the people who share them. Beliefs are a person’s personal opinion. Disrespecting anyones’ beliefs is the same thing as calling them dumb and stupid. That is in essence what Pope Benedict did…

You don’t have to agree with the belief system, but do not treat it like trash unless it includes something like live sacrifice and other harmful things like that.

There’s a difference between respecting the belief and respecting its practices. If you believe in Quetzalcoatl, no problem, I can respect that. If you believe that you have to tear somebody’s heart out with your teeth every evening to ensure that the sun will rise the next day, sure, believe it if you like (and I can even respect that belief, no matter how sure I am you’ll find out otherwise when you can’t do it one day from your jail cell), but I do not respect the practice.

Given the general attitude of your posts I’ve seen in the past, I think it a reasonable expectation. I’d welcome being shown I’m wrong.

It is very intentional that we do NOT know which is the true church, because if we all knew, then we would all flock to that church, and that would fail GOD’s point in testing our faith and level of spirituallity, so the knowledge of which church is it, must be hard to come by to test our faith.
This is an interesting thought and concurs with something I have been reflecting on lately. Maybe a little ā€œspiritual uncertaintyā€ is a good thing as it encourages us, forces us to surrender to God, to trust, more fully. ā€œThe letter kills but the Spirit gives lifeā€ (2 Cor 3:6)

What kind of false dichotomy is THIS?? Respecting a religion itself (what we were talking about from the beginning) entails respecting both the practices AND the beliefs. Both are integral parts that make a religion what it is.

Now you backtrack and say it wasn’t every religion in the world that you claim to tolerate, but only the beliefs of those religions… Well oookay! Even if you try to take that position, you would still be caught contradicting your own point of view because the belief that a certain practice (i.e. human sacrifice) must be carried out by consequence means people should have the right to carry out those practices. You seem to be okay with denying certain religions the right to practice their own customs, and in doing so you are not being tolerant of their beliefs. ā€œForcing your own morality on themā€, so to speak…

Would this be a bad thing, from your point of view?
