Is it weird that I don't really watch or even desire to watch any current tv shows?

As a child and teen I used to devour tv shows. After my reversion to the church I stopped watching a lot of shows because they were too racy or immoral. As the years have passed, I find myself watching tv less and less. As I’ve mentioned before I do watch k-dramas although not as much as when I first discovered them. I just don’t have a lot of interest in watching shows anymore.

I do spend a lot of time online and watching silly YouTube videos. I think part of it is also my ADD since yt videos are short. Unless a drama or show captures me pretty quickly I lose interest. Well anyways I don’t know if I want advice or what because this doesn’t affect my life much. Just, sometimes I feel super left out of conversations since I have no idea what people are talking about 🤷🤷

I practically lived off TV as a kid and young teen, but, when I entered high school, I found myself too busy with school to do anything that I wanted. When freshman year was over, I decided to turn on the TV to my old channels and found that so much has changed that it did not appeal to me anymore. Even Animal Planet which was the educational channel I loved become mostly reality TV and fake documentaries for entertainment purposes. Now I have almost forgotten what TV is. When I read articles about how Americans spend too much of their free time watching TV, I scratch my head and wonder who watches TV anymore. If I am bored now, I usually go on YouTube, browse te web, or watch anime online. I never go to hate movies because what is out does not appeal to me. And I hate it when my old professor for Spanish assigned movies for homework because they were usually 1. lousy, 2. exhausted my attention span.

I used to watch a lot of TV (at university it was an excuse to not do work sometimes 😛 ) - neither my husband nor I really watch it now. Not even the news (which we tend to get from the radio). Partly it’s because so much is actually just utter drivel, and a portion of the remainder might or might not be ‘good drama’ (etc) but does not represent the kind of morality we generally find appealing.

That said one doesn’t have to think that crystal meth is actually a perfectly moral thing to trade in, to, say, find Breaking Bad an enjoyable series, any more than one has to believe in the existence of dragons to watch Game of Thrones or approve of the characters’ sex lives to enjoy Mad Men - to name 3 shows I’ve often been told to watch and never have!

A show just about a wholesome family: 2 children with a stay-at-home mother and a hardworking, usually-capable husband, and who are not really secret agents or having affairs with the neighbours, would probably be a rather dull thing to watch, so sometimes the ‘immorality’ has to exist at some level to have a story worth telling, even if it’s not the point of the show.

Not sure what to offer as you yourself say you don’t really want or need advice - but you’re definitely not alone!

I think in 30 years time are we all going to look back and say “I really wish I had watched more television”, or, that we had spent more time in the wider world. I think there are many more exciting and beautiful things happening in the world, than on a screen in the sitting room.

To the OP -

You’re doing fine. No need to worry. A few friends of mine don’t watch TV so they get “Really?” at work from people who ask them which shows they like. Immorality, as in partial nudity, simulated sex scenes, and heroes who aren’t very heroic, is not worth watching. In my case, I watch a little from time to time to warn people about how bad it’s getting.

Best,
Ed

Part of what you are describing is just simple age and growth.
When you’re younger, your attention span is shorter and the simplistic entertains you more than the complicated. When I was a kid I loved the Six Million Dollar Man. At 50? It’s jaw-droppingly bad. When I was a kid, I never watched PBS shows. Now I seek them out. As you get older your brain expands, as does your emotional maturity (or at least it should).
To the things described above. Why would I want to see simulated sex? I’ve been married for almost thirty years. Are they gonna teach me something new? I doubt it.
I have no desire to see gory gross-out violence or someone cut into a human body (I’m pretty sure the Church says something about respect for the body). Why would I want to see someone vomit? Or a “good” serial killer? Or a woman raped?
When I was a kid in a high school cafeteria, I laughed at all the sex humor. But now? No.
TV simply displays the lack of imagination and intelligence modern entertainers have.
You’re not weird. You’re just an adult.

No. Ever since I entered high school telly watching became near non-existent. I simply had no time. With this sudden change of habit - I use to watch a lot in grade school - my urge to watch diminished greatly. I then went to university, brought a television, but didn’t use it; only my roommate used it play video games. Same thing with my future roommates - only used it to play video games. I’m rather selective on what video games I play, not for any moral reasons, just interest, so my use of the box still wasn’t great. I do have certain tv shows I sparingly watch, but that’s mostly on my lap/desktop.

Recently I use the telly for sports and political debates, but other than those two my interest in tv shows have remained relatively dormant. I’m more interested in movies, though that as well has diminished within the past couple of years.

Most of the shows on television today are mindless junk, so you’re not missing much. There are better things to do with your time, such as CAF!

Thank you all for your responses. I guess I’m not as strange as I thought! 😛

I do spend a lot of time in CAF, other forums, reading news articles and as I said before watching YouTube videos. I do also listen to a lot of music since I’ve always loved it. I think because of my ADD I tend to become hyper focused on certain songs and will listen non stop. Like this song just came out an hour ago and I’ve already seen it like 20 times LOL

I am also into twitter. I do filter it very strictly though since there could be a lot of dicey stuff out there. I guess more and more people do get their entertainment in the internet now rather than TV which was the norm 10 to 20 years ago.

The people I mix with have got too much else to talk about than TV.

I’ve never had a set of my own. My computer doesn’t do video and I refrain from you tube, facebook and twitter anyway. When people refer to them I ignore it. They are missing out on more than I am.

Pax Christi!

Good for you! I’m down to EWTN, Turner Classic Movies and baseball. And I have cut down on those choices.

Time for gardening; there’s always something good to read.

God bless!!

Why would it be strange? Except for a few years in the mid '90s, I haven’t watched TV since around 1980, perhaps even earlier (don’t remember the exact date). Anything that is really worth watching ends up on dvd (& a lot of stuff that isn’t worth my time, but I don’t buy it). And before that I worked swing shift, so didn’t see prime-time shows.

Life is good! 😃

I don’t have TV and don’t miss it at all. When I do have occasion to watch it at someone’s house, I get impatient with the dull and slow-moving plots of sitcoms, cop & crime stories, and other fictional shows, and just as impatient with the slow exposition of non-fiction shows (like shows about killer storms or cute animals). I’m glad when it’s time to go back home and not have to watch it.

I watched a couple of “reality” shows while visiting family - they were so repetitive & boring! Books are better - I can speed-read over the boring parts. 🙂

We don’t watch network TV. However, we do have Amazon videos, CatholicTV, EWTN, etc. We also bought on DVD a couple of shows that are no longer on, and we watch them, too.

Any time someone has exposed me to network TV in the past 10 years or more, I am usually disappointed. If they would make shows similar to Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley; Mork and Mindy, etc. that would be great!

No. People have their own preferences, it’s not weird if you prefer not to watch t.v. and don’t watch it.

I can understand why you don’t watch current TV shows. A lot of them promote a liberal agenda. A lot of them are not good either. The only current TV show I have watched recently was Once Upon a Time because of the Frozen storyline. Even that show has a liberal bias. I mostly watch sports on TV.

I very seldom watch tv either. I grew up during the golden age of television. we had so many good shows to choose from with only 3 channels. there is nothing worth watching today in television. growing up I couldn’t wait to see the new fall schedule. the state of today’s programs is really sad. the less tv you watch now the better off it will be for your brain.

I don’t know your age, but I’ve seen statistics that show younger people are more and more only watching things online. They might still “watch TV”, but they have it hooked to the internet, so they can watch things on websites like YouTube. I am a young person that grew up with internet access, so watching things online is natural to me. My parents, on the other hand, grew up watching TV shows, so they continue to do so. Not all older people will be this way though. Some people are more interested in new technology while others keep doing what they’ve always done.

I think there’s just a lot of bad TV shows these days. I never watch TV, and I find that the best videos can be found on YouTube (old TV shows too!)

The only TV stations worth watching are sports stations and Turner Classic Movies. PBS is good once in a while.
