To clarify the title, I know that you begin discernment with a specific person because you’re not sure yet whether you’re supposed to marry them. But what if you’re not sure you’re called to marriage at all, with anyone?
I’m a 17-year-old girl who’s going away to college next school year, and I don’t have anyone in particular in mind. I’m asking in general- I like to have answers to these questions before they become a concern. I don’t know whether I’m called to marriage. I don’t even know how I would know if I were. I’m kind of OK with the idea of living the generous single life, but then I find myself looking forward to having a family when I grow up, so I don’t know.
I guess I’m asking two things. First, how will I know whether I’m called to marriage or something else? And second, is it wise to go on dates with people (or even have romantic relationships) if I’m not yet sure whether I’m supposed to eventually be married?
I know there are a ton of very wise and intelligent people on this site (both married and single), so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
