Is it wrong for a man to knit for a hobby?

I love to paint little ceramic houses that they sell around Christmas time. It’s so relaxing, I’ve done it for years. Sadly, and this breaks my heart-Wal Mart doesn’t sell them for 2.96 anymore, and Michaels craft store (that super cool chain store) hides them!

Mine has three and a half isles of yarn and one for tools, including the krafty knitter. They also have alot of embrodary stuff…mostly kits but still atleast a half of an isle. They DON’T have much sewing stuff…and since walmart got rid of theres its impossible to find any sewing stuff.

My Michael’s has yarn and floss and all the accoutrements to use them.

It also has a large scrapbooking department and a decent cake decorating aisle!

Oh, and my local Michael’s is not a huge one.

I wish my husband could knit! Then he wouldn’t complain in yarn stores (or about yarn purchases). Then again… there would be yarn competition in our house… not sure how I’d feel about that.

All of these posts reminds me of another story about my in-laws.
The very first time I ever met them I cam around the corner into their living room and there they sat in their chairs, she reading the newspaper and he doing needlepoint. Talk about a study in contrasts!! I found out later that he was building footstools for friends as gifts and not only did he do the wonderful carpentry but also the needlepoint and other sewing.
This man also hunted and fished. Nothing mamby-pamby about him.

Now, making pies, like I do, is another thing entirely. Especially apple pie with slices so thin they’re translucent; when you use dark fall honey instead of sugar and protect the crust so the juice will boil and carmelize. Now there’s a real man’s hobby!

I also enjoy working my cattle up close in the chutes, riding my horse and hunting water moccasins with pistols. But so do my daughters, so maybe I ought to be more circumspect about those activities.

My Michael’s has no knitting/crocheting stuff whatsoever, and it’s a BIG one. You have to go to the little Irish lady’s yarn shop downtown for yarn and accouterments here but that’s OK, she’s so cute and she makes her own yarns and dyes them .

I’m showing my age here but does anyone here remembers a football player, Rosy Greer? I think he did some acting too. Anyway if I remember right - He did something like croceting(sp) or knitting or something.
Now this was a big football player. I sure wouldn’t tell HIM it’s wrong.

Yes, I remember him. He was a big bear of a man. And his craft of choice was needlepoint. I think there was a regrouping of interest in this type of needleart because of all the publicity he got for doing it. I was going to mention him earlier but didn’t think anyone else would remember!

Well, the best thing is getting someone to show you. How’s your dexterity? For example, do you play guitar or work with small tools? If not you’ve got alot of muscle memory to create. I’d suggest using the krafty knitter looms just to build up the muscle in your hands. They have GREAT hat looms (the circle ones) The tiniest (blue) is for a infant, the red is for a child, the green can be for an adult depending on the yarn. I haven’t figured out just who’s head would fit in one of the yellow rings.

MMmmmmm. Cookies. I have no idea how to make “real” cookies; you know, cookies from scratch. You know, it just occurred to me that one of the problems men have is that we’re awfully narrow in our abilities, even when it comes to hobbies. Lots of men know how to cook one thing only, but don’t really have a wide range of skills like women often do. Same with everything, really. Some guys are good at woodworking, but they can’t knit or cook anything at all. Some guys are good hunters, but they can’t weld or sew on a button.

Gentlemen, I think we’ll just have to admit our inferiority to women.

When I was a kid I used to crochet (I stunk at it) and when I started in the fire service I made a hook rug. Not quite what you’d associate with the stereotypical “tough fireman” huh.

I also like cooking and baking although my daughter and wife have the monopoly in the latter.

Personally, I like quilting. There is a woman in my sewing circle who’s husband will knit and quilt with her sometimes, but he never comes to our meetings (those are really just for girl talk anyway)

If there is a JoAnn or Hancock Fabric store near you, they usually have beginner sewing lessons. Other fabric stores may do the same. or there may be a vocational school in your area that has adult education that might offer sewing lessons.

Good idea. You may also want to see if there is a sewing machine store in your area. They usually give classes.

I’m surprised the overwhelming response is that a man knitting is completely fine…I think it is pretty weird. I would think a man doing most of your typical “michael’s” crafts would be fairly odd…can you seriously imagine a man scrapbooking, crocheting, knitting, painting tee-shirts, making wreaths…
