Is it wrong for catholics to support united way?

When the Salvation Army is collecting for a disaster, they draw on their resources for costs and send 100% to the disaster relief. At other times, they only send 82%, which is great for a church, not so good for other charities. Still, I contribute in good conscience because they are literally the only people doing some work that needs to be done.
 
You are right. The state promotes and adheres to a set of religious beliefs as well.

After 9/11 teh Knights of Columbus used its insurance agents to deliver $10,000 checks on the 13th to families of fallen first responders . . . and raised the money later.
 
The Knights and Catholic Charities are always some of the first boots on the ground in time of disaster.
