Is it wrong for me to pursue catholicism?

thanks everyone! me and my roommate (who is on here occasionally) are looking into classes this fall, i will continue to pursue it!
i guess my biggest fear is there are some things i will just never agree with. and i refuse to pretend like i do, but i just hope there are some things i can respectfully disagree with and still be accepted.

It might prove helpful to do a search for topics under the FAITH link at the top of the page. You could look up specific questions/difficulties you have without getting into a debate.

hey guys! so i have a odd question, as i have mentioned before, i am not a catholic, just very interested in it. my problem is, i disagree with a few positions of the catholic church. but i agree with the overwhelming majority. so, i guess my question is, is it wrong of me to pursue catholicism knowing i don’t agree with some things?

i have gone to several churches in my day, and have never found one i am 100% in agreement with, but i have always been drawn to cathlolicism. and think it would do me good.

It’s natural that we be curious and desire to offer advice, insight and assistance in understanding and accepting the teachings.
Of course if you do not wish to share here, that’s fine too.
We don’t wish to come off as “pushy”

When I was considering the Catholic Church, I made a list of “issues” I had with the Church. Then I searched CAF, books and the internet with this list by my side. Sometimes I would add to it, but in the end I found answers to all my “issues”. Study and prayer will be important tools in this journey.

Many people on this site have had a similar experience and wish to help you. Please don’t think them pushy, just excited to help someone in a situation they have faced.

No, God will illumine your path and his spirit will lead you safely home to Holy Mother Church.

That said if at some point you decide to be baptised into the church you will have to agree to obey all its teachings. But that could be years off and by then I have no doubt you will have been able to accept all The Church teaches.

well i rather not get into what i disagree with, don’t want it to turn into a debate over things.

i have read A LOT on the issues that i disagree with, and i guess that’s where i find (i hesitate to use this word) flaw with some doctrine/theology. and quite honestly, the more i read why the catholic church believes what the do on these issues, the more i disagree, but keep in mind this is only on very very few issues.

You may want to inquire with a local Catholic church to see when their next RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) classes are starting. Many parishes are starting these classes now or in early September.

The first several classes are specifically geared for people like you who are interested in the Catholic faith, but who have questions or concerns about it. There will be no pressure to join or continue with the classes if you are not comfortable with moving forward. This will give you a chance to pose to the RCIA team and clergy any of the questions you have that might be roadblocks to further exploring the Catholic faith.

Very well, I would then urge you to attend an RCIA class and perhaps engage the priest at whatever parish maybe near you. These may prove to be better resources for you. I will say this, joining the Church if you have fundamental dogmatic disagreements (say abortion, or the role of the magesterium) will be tough. But perhaps by getting involved in an RCIA and talking with a priest you may find a new way of looking at whatever is specifically bothering you.

I agree, it is almost impossible to answer your question without knowing the issues you have with Church teaching. If the disagreements are a matter of discipline this is different from a dogmatic teaching. I would definitely recommend an appointment to speak with your local parish priest, he can help you discern things and give you some good resources.

There is a reason though that you are being drawn to the Church. The Holy Spirit is moving you to the fullness of God’s Truth. Keep following Him. God bless you.

I was very much in the same boat; I also disagreed with quite a few premises of the church.

Making a study of the faith, through this Forum and the website to which it is attached, together with prayer and reading scripture, allowed me to come to terms with these positions. I no longer harbour such opposition.
