It may be inappropriate, but it is not deadly.

Oh, I know it’s not necessary. I’m a musician who could make money playing outside of church, but I choose not to. Other people can have the applause. It is *not *necessary- and I can say this as a professional who could get plenty of applause (and some money too) by singing in secular places. It is a precept of the Church to support the Church. This doesn’t just mean giving them money- it means using your God-given talents to help bring people closer to Christ. For me, that talent is music.
I’m sorry but you are wrong to disagree with me, as we’re about on the same page. The choir sings for Our Lord, not for the people. If the choir happens to please the people, that’s a bonus! Then the people are happy and can further appreciate the mass. If the choir happens to be horrible and everyone hates it, oh well. God loves it.I’d have to disagree there. I’d say the choir sings primarily for God but it also helps the congregation.
Beautiful music lifts the soul from the mundane world to a world that is more spiritual and by that, the congregation is able to more tune its mind to the mind of Christ and therefore present a more worthy sacrifice.
Acceptable or not, I’m sick of it.After the final hymn of the Sunday Mass, the parish I attend will applaud the choir’s singing. Is this acceptable?
Because the Bingo game coming up makes all the old ladies pumped! LOL!Acceptable or not, I’m sick of it.
Our Church even applaudes the announcements that are read before the final blessing.

I’m not talking about “pleasing the people”. I’m saying that everything including the form, music and the beauty of the church, statues all putting our minds in a place where the focus is on the spiritual.I’m sorry but you are wrong to disagree with me, as we’re about on the same page. But it should never, ever, under any circumstances, be applauded.
We have a lot of musicians/ singers on this board.Oh, I know it’s not necessary. I’m a musician who could make money playing outside of church, but I choose not to. Other people can have the applause.
Absolutely. But it shouldn’t be applauded during mass, or even in the church. Applauding the choir doesn’t praise God, it praises the choir.I’m not talking about “pleasing the people”. I’m saying that everything including the form, music and the beauty of the church, statues all putting our minds in a place where the focus is on the spiritual.
Have you never, during mass, looked at the crucifix or the stained glass windows and praised God? Music does the same thing.
I agree.Absolutely. But it shouldn’t be applauded during mass, or even in the church. Applauding the choir doesn’t praise God, it praises the choir.
It is a quote from his book, The Spirit of the Liturgy. (Written back when he was still the Prefect of the CDF). The link takes you to where you can order it from Amazon. Thanks for all the answers everyone!
