Is it wrong or selfish to pray about losing weight?

I was diagnosed with a chronic disease last year and put on steroids. It caused me to gain about 45 pounds. Although I’m off of the steroids now, I am struggling to lose that weight. When I pray, I normally pray for others. I don’t pray for myself and I would feel odd doing so.

Is it selfish to pray to lose weight? I not only need to do it for health reasons, but I am really embarrassed at how heavy I’ve become since my diagnosis. I’m about 60 pounds overweight. Thank you for any responses.

No, it’s neither wrong nor selfish…regardless of how you put on the weight. You’d pray to God to help with your healing and how you deal with if you had pneumonia, a serious injury, or the chronic disease you were placed on steroids for. Asking for His help getting back to a healthy weight is no different. I say this to others who have gained weight due to poor eating habits or overeating, too. It’s not selfish or sinful, and I highly recommend going to Our Lord with any issues you have. God Bless!

In my opinion, it is absolute fine and there is nothing wrong with it. I’d say it’s beyond fine and into being a Good thing

It is absolutely fine to pray over this matter.

I’m sure you have praised God and thanked Him for your doctors, their diagnosis and the health that has been restored to you. I’m also sure that, when you were ill you prayed for healing. This prayer is no different. It is a healing of a different sort, but a healing none the less.
Take this to your loving Father in prayer.

Peace
James

Dear SaberMom, it’s all a matter of intention! Make sure your prayer is never motivated by vanity. Your souls is beautiful anyways, and your body will be glorified on the last day.

Please receive my prayers for your health.

I have prayed for strength/ self control in my weight loss efforts. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that!
Ps I’ve lost 35 lbs! You can do it too! 🙂

No, it is not. Here is a prayer that may help you. It should be said three times a day, I guess before each meal would be appropriate. I say it daily and it does help.

Heavenly Father, I surrender my body and weight loss to Your Divine care and love. I ask You to remove all unnecessary and excesive weight from my body and return my body to its healthy and balanced state. Give me eating habits that support my health and life energy and help me to love and care for my body from this day forth. Amen.

May God bless you and may He lep you to attain you goal. Praying for you.

Hope not, I do it all the time. There isn’t much I do without talking to God about it.

I hope not, because I’m in the same boat! I have about 50lbs to loose, and I don’t loose easily, either.😦

its always good to pray for the help

ive done some spiritual fasting lately and its been helping with my prayer life, my self control and lost a couple lbs

I just got a juicer so I go a day or 2 every week with just fresh vegetable juice/ fruit juice

although I am in no way saying you should and if you decided to - you should consult a physician and all that mumbo jumbo

you have my prayers!

Selfishness has not conventionally been taken to include any and all actions which merely benefit oneself, for that would be much too wide a usage of such a disparaging term. If a behavior is selfish, then it must be excessively self-absorbed and/or self-rewarding, with the qualification of excess usually entailing some significant disregard toward the (often competing) goods of others. Unless you’ve been flatly ignoring any prayer for others in order to somehow concentrate all divine favor onto yourself instead (say, under a mistaken impression that God’s given you only a limited allotment of listening-time per day or something), then I believe you’re in the clear here. Plus, you may not be giving your motives enough credit. As you’re apparently a mom, I presume you’ve also got a husband around. Now, as you may know, spouses everywhere have had a persistent reputation for being pleased whenever their respective beloveds proactively work at maintaining a healthy and attractive body. Therefore I’m confident that there’s someone else in your life who would benefit from and nonetheless appreciate how you want to lose weight. In fact, even if you haven’t consciously had his wishes in mind, at the end of the day, your own desire to remain physically fit and appealing is likely rooted in a deeper habit of yours that’s driving you to want to please a man you love, so I’d even venture to say that this modest concern you have might actually be indicative of a marital virtue, not a vice.

Furthermore, petitionary prayer is always primarily for the prayer (that is, the person who’s doing the praying) and only for the petition itself in the sense of its extra function on a less important level, so every time someone prays he’s nevertheless mostly doing something that’s, objectively speaking, for himself (despite, paradoxically, the intention often being quite selfless, e.g., while praying only for others). That’s because God made prayer fundamentally efficacious in the fact that the very act of speaking and reaching out to our Father in heaven is, by itself, through our nature as communicative social creatures, a unitive mode of personal relationship. He wills that Man, for his own good, shall learn to always go to Him with his wants and needs for constant provision, to faithfully rely on his Lord’s Love with an acknowledged dependency in order to be happy. (I think the ultimate reason for this may simply be that doing so (along with suffering) is the most effective, humbling, and gratifying way to inspire Man into willful, intimate communion with Him in an eternal afterlife.)

Oh thank you all so much for the words of encouragement. I am going to start praying today. I hadn’t thought about how my weight loss would affect others - it definitely will. It will save us money (I only have one pair of pants that fit me now, but if I just dropped the weight, I’d be back in my old clothes), and I’d be a lot more active with my kids. I hadn’t thought of that until I read In Spiration’s post.

Thank you all so much. Going to go pray now. 🙂

Glad our (name removed by moderator)ut was of help.

As an aside…well maybe not…

When I am advising people on spiritual growth (overcoming sin etc), I often use “dieting and exercise” as an analogy, because it is so prevalent today and also because their are many similarities.
In both cases, dieting and spiritual growth, there is need for a goal, a long term commitment and a plan. In both we cannot expect “instant results”, but rather look for a gradual improvement over time. In both we must also expect temptations to increase and set-backs to occur. But in both we also expect that the end result will be well worth the effort.

Why do I say this…I guess because I hope to encourage you that this undertaking can have more than simply physical benefits. The disciplines necessary for spiritual growth can aid your weight loss and the disciplines necessary for weight loss can also help your spiritual growth.
So - as you pray for God to help you lose the weight, consider, as you make your plan, how you can do all for the glory of God…Ask God to show you the lessons He wants you to learn i this process and guide you…even through set-backs when necessary…how to grow closer to Him.

Peace
James
