upon learning how to pray the rosary, i found my favorites seem to be the divine mercy, luminous mystery & 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit instead of saying the traditional rosary prayer?

and when i do say the regular prayer, after the 10 Hail Mary’s do i hold the chain part when i say the Glory Be and Fatima prayers, then hold the next big bead and announce the mystery and say the Our Father?

no it’s not wrong to be saying the divine mercy chaplet, the luminious mysteries, and the 7 gifts. but don’t think of it as saying these “instead” of saying the traditional rosary. You should say them all; they’re all great!😃 and in response to your question about saying the rosary, fisheaters.com/rosary.html scroll to the middle of the page and you’ll see how to say it and the different variations other Catholics do.

Nothing wrong with saying particular mysteries of the Rosary rather than others, if you want to do so. Unless you’re praying in public or with others, of course, as it might confuse them if you suddenly just did your own thing.

But bear in mind the Rosary is actually meant to be, when the mysteries are prayed as named, a reflection on more or less the whole of the Gospel, from Christ’s Incarnation through His infancy, ministry on earth, Passion, Resurrection and the birth of the Church on Pentecost.

For that reason I personally would make sure to pray the other mysteries as well, at least sometimes. For example, you might want to focus on the Joyful Mysteries at Christmas time, the Sorrowful during Holy Week, the Glorious at Easter. Not that you have to.

Nothing wrong with praying the Divine Mercy chaplet if you like it.

I’m unfamiliar with what you mean by ‘seven gifts of the Holy Spirit’ - what sort of prayer is that?

I would advise reading the secret of the rosary by st Louis Marie de Montfort.

No, it is NOT wrong, although you should say the rosary for Our Blessed Mother also. Believe it or not, the praying of the rosary is a very powerful prayer. It not only helps you in your prayer requests, but it can also be used to help release some souls from Purgatory. You can also donate the prayer to Our Blessed Mother for her heavenly treasury which can be used in many ways.

When you do pray the rosary, hold the next big bead, announce the mystery and say the Our Father, the pray the next decade. At the end of the last decade, say the “Hail Holy Queen”, give to, or ask your intentions of, Our Lady and then say the Doxology ( Glory Be… ).
God Bless you.

One reason the Church is Catholic is that there are devotions and ways of prayer to feed every soul.

That’s right. I love the Rosary, I encourage everybody to say it – but nobody has to say the Rosary. It’s a private devotion, not an obligation.

If you do say the Rosary, you can say whatever Mysteries you like. There have been tons and tons of different accountings of Mysteries, and there are tons of different Rosaries and Chaplets and Coronals too. (Like the Franciscan one.)

I remember that the Jesuit martyrs in America taught a Rosary of the Holy Spirit that was just tons and tons of Glory Be’s. 🙂 Boy, I had to run around to find a French source to explain that one when I ran across it in a book about the North American martyrs. But it was very common in their day, and much loved.

It’s more important that you pray than that you worry about what prayers you pray. (Assuming they’re good normal prayers.) So just pray.

Of course it’s not wrong, I can’t think of a situation where Prayer could be wrong 😃

That said I’m curious about the Luminous mysteries, having never prayed them myself, I wonder what would you do if you had lived before they were invented in the 1980s, certainly the Mysteries from Our Lady and Saint Dominic have been prayed much more often and have nourished many souls. I think that’s why the Church encourages different mysteries every day and specifically stated that the Luminous are optional.

haha i was born in 1984.

i said the rosary last night for the first time. took me 40 minutes (because i read the bible verses that had to do with each mystery)

i had a hard time staying with it, keeping my mind on the prayer and not having it wander, but by the 4th decade i was able to focus. im sure as time goes on and God willing i will get stronger on this…

plus it was hard to focus because i dont have the mysteries memorized, so i had to stop, read the computer screen in between each one so id know what mystery to state, and i never knew the Glory Be or Fatima (but i know it now, i mean after 5 decades of prayer on the rosary’s i better know it hahaha, how can you not? and by 5 decades i mean 1 time around the rosary, not 50 years of praying incase i worded it funny)

I’ve said the rosary many times now (in fact today, while at the adoration chapel) and I still don’t know how to say the Hail Holy Queen correctly. :o But, I figure my earthly Mom wouldn’t care if I got all the words right, so Mary wouldn’t either. And God knows and loves us and doesn’t care if we get everything “correct.” God sees not as man sees–he sees the heart. Don’t worry about reading the screen, just go with it. In time, you’ll pick it up. In time, your heart will develop a rhythm. You will truly learn to pray without ceasing. 🙂
