Hello everyone,
So I have been wrestling with this for a long time. My parents are not the most mature, they don have the best jobs, and never really think about their decisions. I feel like I am literally their parents, I have to help them with work after school is out, and I don’t mean to sound like I’m spoiled but everyone around our community never has to do anything like that, and I’m really tired of it, being targeted by people because of them. I love my parents anyway, and try my best to make them proud, even though they make fun of me for my strong belief in Christ, as I always try to get them to go to confession, which they never want to do. I feel hurt, I try to bond with them over things that are really important to me, and nothing. A few nights ago I told them I will be enlisting into the Marines as soon as I graduate, and was interrupted with no, you aren’t going, we don’t support you, ect., and I legitametly feel hurt I wanted to go into the Corps since I was 6 years old. I don’t feel supported, and honestly I stopped caring what they think. I will do what I have to do to graduate, and after that, I’m positive I won’t have a problem cutting them out of my life, like other people who don’t support me. Is this wrong in the eyes of the Church? I’m just tired I guess.

You should respect your parents, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything they say once you are an adult. If you want to join the Marines then do so. I don’t think you should cut your parents off over this. Hopefully they will come around after a while.

You have an obligation of obedience until you reach the age of emancipation. After that you have an obligation to honor your Father and Mother (4th Commandment)

It would be wrong to cut your parents out of your life, based on the teaching of the Church. You will be able to redefine your relationship as an adult-to-adult one but you still owe them honor and respect.
