Is it sinful to create/use Catholic clergy characters in games (i.e. role-playing games)? A part of me would think it is wrong, but I cannot quite put my finger on why (I am Scrupulous according to many who know me so there are a lot of things I worry about), but maybe because you are playing an important character that you want to be in real life (but then again, is it wrong to play a wealthy or secularly powerful character?). I have gotten mixed answers from Priests.

It would seem to me there is nothing wrong with using a Priest/Bishop/Pope/etc. character, as long as:
  1. You are not trying to claim to be a Catholic cleric in real life (unless you are one in real life)
  2. You are not having them do things that are sinful
What about writing stories/screenplays that involve Catholic clerics?

It all simply boils down to the portrayal of such characters.

AND give them extra hit points:D
Hmm, I find that debatable. Priests and clerics are usually depicted as healing and support classes. While some games make them out to have high HP for survivability, others tend to give them low numbers for that stat in order to balance things out by making them the weak point of the party (the healer’s job is to keep the group alive after all). 🤓

What about in more textual games? Like where you are just writing the characters’ interactions (violent or not)? How are they viewed then?

Well just replace HP with how many hits a character can take. Though personally, I prefer portraying them as quite vulnerable (and usually female). It would make the group look overpowered if their healer was just as hard-bodied as they were. Personality though can also play a role.

I’m curious as to what game you are referring to, I’ve never heard of such a game: please enlighten me. 🙂

Text-rpgs are common on internet forums. 🤓
I am surprised someone has not gotten one going on this forum. With all the people (myself sometimes included) who love to discuss how they would change things or how thing should be, you’d think this would be a great environment for ‘The Vatican: A Catholic RPG’ or something. In fact, I mentioned an idea like that a LONG time ago on these forums.

Well in their defense, this is a religious forum. Usually the type of forums that have role-play stuff are gaming forums, fan-fiction forums, cartoon forums, writer’s forums, anime forums etc.

Ahhh for a Friar Tuck:)

I think you know that this is your scrupulosity talking.

I think the only time it would be wrong to write stories about priests is if you write a false/slanderous story about a real life person who is a priest (and no, it doesn’t mean you have to make sure that the name you use in the story doesn’t match a real life priest :p)

There is nothing wrong with having a sinful priest in a story for example, since it is a story, and you’re not sinning or promoting sinfulness. Just like if you were writing a detective story you might feature a murderer, even though murder is sinful.
