Is it wrong to get a tattoo?

I have two tattoos.

Both of which have personal meaning, I drew myself and made sure they were not in visible spots.
You could only see both of them if I was in a two piece bathing suit. Since I don’t wear two piece bathing suits anymore…my husband only sees both of them.

There is nothing inherently wrong with tattoos…but they aren’t something you actually make a statement with anymore.

My husband has no tattoos and I liked that about him. Everyone gets tattoos now.

if you do get a tattoo I wouldn’t recommend you get it in a visible spot. Some employers won’t hire you as a result.
The military won’t hire you at all.

just remember how bad they will look when you get older, talk to an old person and they will tell you how emarrassed they are by them… and on your wrists for all to see forever !!! getting communion, shaking hands with an interviewer for a job , you future mother in law etc etc etc…

years ago alot of girls got those “tramp stamps” on their lower back and knowing alot of them now they hate the day they got it cause their kids now laugh at them, and their weight and age changed and now they look wrinkled and bad…

and they cant ever get rid of them,

forever is forever
fun now bad later

Again, I honestly am not bothered by how they will look when I’m sixty. I have already thought all of this through. I have had these ideas since I was 15-16 and I still want them and like the ideas. So its not, to me, a question of if I will regret it later on. Both things mean something to me and I don’t see myself regretting it.
And of course they won’t look lovely when my skin is all wrinkled and stuff. Haha

Well my side isn’t a very visible spot unless, like you said, I wear a two piece bathing suit. Or a shirt that revels my sides. And my wrists, like I have stated, are a place that can be easily covered up for work reasons if need be. I have no intention of going into the military. I’m planing to become a crime scene photographer. And if a job I apply for doesn’t want visible tattoos I will cover the ones on my wrists. See they’ll be small and in a place that will be easy to cover. No big deal.
I’ve always liked tattoos >.> haha and neither of my tattoos are going to “make a statement” both have personal meanings and are close to my heart <3

I can understand how you would like to honor your sister who has autism, but maybe there is a more creative way to honor her thru maybe a piece of jewlery, like a bracelet with those inscribed words on it. You could add your sisters name. Also you may even start your own business or venture with a jewlery maker to advocate for families with loved ones with autism. Jane Seymore did with her cause!. Why not you!

Good luck!
I don’t know. I want something that eill stay with me forever, you know? Something that I can look at every day no matter where I am or where she is and think of her. The bracelet idea is cute c: and I might do that, but I really am wanting this tattoo so I can have something that will last as long as I do no matter what.

I like the idea another poster mentioned about looking at a drawing of your tattoo daily for a year before getting one.

My son, 23 - hair to his waist - very free spirited - says that the human brain doesn’t stop developing until around 25. Although he probably will get a tattoo some day, he says it will be after the age of 25. He’s followed that thought for a very long time. He has many friends with tattoos and said sometimes they regret them soon after getting them.

I often ask people to tell me about their tattoos. I have noticed that it is sometimes hard to read those that are words.

Keep in mind the changing shape through adulthood of most people’s sides. Stretch marks - common for many women - could alter the script. You may have a different favorite saying at age 28 or 38 - which really isn’t that far away from you at age 18 - time flies.
Haha really long hairr xD and I see your and your son’s point. But again I have had these ideas for a few years and still love them.

Have someone/the tatoo artist will if you want (no idea what they charge for that) use a pen/sharpie (there may be something else they want to use- henna?) to do this first. You keep it filled in/fresh, and if you still like it in 6mo, then look into having it done. The people I know who have tatoo’s, and still love all of them years later, take that approach.
That’s a good idea c: I might try that and see how it goes. Danke! c:

It’s not just employers who may not appreciate your body art, but potential dates (future spouses) too. People have certain impressions of girls with ink, as indicated in the term “tramp stamp”.

Just saying…

Anyway, I think you’ve got some good advice in this thread regarding ways to test out this and make sure of it, as much as possible, before committing. Hindsight is 20/20, so just be careful about this.

I hated when I was a kid and people threw up the age thing, but it is kinda true. The things I liked when I was 15-18 I don’t like now and I’m only 24. I think a lot of people are that way. That is why people keep telling you to be totally sure and to try it with markers and such. People change A LOT in their early 20s. Most people I know who got tattoos when they were fresh out of high school regret them now. You are 18 and technically an adult, but to be frank, 18 year olds still have a lot of maturing to do and you will change.

So true. I abhorred it when people played the age card when I was younger. Now I find myself on the other end. :o I greatly resist even mentioning it because I know how I felt when people did that.

The OP’s tattoo is family related (as opposed to being the lyrics to a current pop song), so I can see that reducing the chance for regret. But, in thinking back, when I was going from age 15 to 18, it seemed like a lifetime packed into a few years. But now I blink and three years go by. :o

I have one! A small cross on the inside of my wrist, which I had done three years ago. I love it. It’s comforting to have, and even provides opportunities to talk to people about my faith when they ask about it. It’s never been a problem at any work or school situations (I’m a grad student & museum docent), partially because they’re so common now and partially because it’s easily to cover up with a watch or bracelet when I want to.

If it’s something you really want and you’ve thought it through, go for it! 👍

I have several tattoos and they are on my arms, upper and lower and wrists. I give out holy communion at my church and most know I have tattoos but I always wear long sleeves when giving out communion just In case anybody is offended by them. Half of them are religious and half not (tattoos not congregation! Lol).

The Church has never said anything against tattoos.

I have one, the rampant lion of Scotland on my shoulder.

It has been stated that tattoos in and of themselves are not immoral unless what they portray is immoral. So, while I am not a fan of a person with many tattoos (especially females) I would say that if that is what you want to do then do it. It is permanent but you are well aware of that. Is it wrong to get a tattoo? If that is your question and what you are getting keeps your character clean (which what you are choosing seems to do) then get your tattoo. God bless you and know that you have a “tattoo” on your soul that you received when you were baptized. The Church calls it an indelible mark or sacramental seal. Just as permanent will be the messages inked onto your skin…teachccd 🙂

The choice is yours. The Catholic Church says nothing pro or con to my knowledge. A few things to consider from a woman with three tattoos. IF you decide to get them, get them in easily covered places. My mom who has a few of her own told me that, because she said there are employers who won’t like them and if they are in easily covered places (I don’t suggest someplace where you have to wear long sleeves but thats just opinion) Something small on your wrist can be covered by a watch or bracelet as long as its small/thin. I had a supervisor at work who was very successful and made six figures who had a small wrist tattoo that I didn’t know she had until I ran into her outside of work.

As others have stated make a well thought out choice on anything that will be on your body forever. Expect that you may look at one or two of your tattoos and have outgrown them but if they were well thought out you can respect and appreciate the time in your life that they represent. This is true for me in my first tatt, it’s my stage name from when I performed heavily. I mostly go by my birth name now but I wouldn’t trade it or cover it for anything.

Just some things to consider, best of luck to you.

I’ve got quite a few tattoo’s and I’d hate to think that an employer wouldn’t hire me because of them - that’s like not employing someone because of their faith…

You might want to refer to Catholics United for the Faith, which can be found online. Look under tattoos. It has a good commentary there.

Whether it is wrong or not depends on your intent. If you are a blood donor or considering to be a blood donor or bone marrow transplant donor, you may want to reconsider since you can be deferred for a year.
God Bless! :juggle:

Leviticus 19:28 says you shouldn’t get tattoos if you are looking for an answer in the bible. Question would be if that law still applies to this day. If you understand God to be the same yesterday as today and tomorrow (or however it goes I think this is also in the bible maybe Hebrews) than I would say that his moral Laws do not change (he changed dietary laws and the festival days). So the final question would be: Does not getting tattoos fall as a moral Law of God? In my opinion no it doesn’t but there are some that think that it does. My answer for you is whenever you face a gray area, Don’t. Make a t-shirt or something else be creative with it. If you do t-shirts than you and your sibling can where them together, that would be pretty cool. You could even design the shirt together. I’m 22 and I use to think I wanted a tattoo. People in my life have died, been sick, this kid I knew died at 8 years old from leukemia and we started a foundation called “never give up” because he was a beast and gave it all he had haha. Could I of gotten a tattoo? Yes, but a foundation that can carry his name on and help kids who are fighting just like him wont die with me. Just a thought.

Just a thought, what will happen to the tattoo when our bodies are resurrected in their glorified state in heaven?

Also, is there anyone else on this thread with concerns for the OP contracting an infectious disease or skin infection thru dirty needles, contaminated water or ink?
