Is it wrong to go to a sports game, in a stadium, on Sunday? I know that in the CCC says,

“2187 Sanctifying Sundays and holy days requires a common effort. Every Christian should avoid making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord’s Day. Traditional activities (sport, restaurants, etc.), and social necessities (public services, etc.), require some people to work on Sundays, but everyone should still take care to set aside sufficient time for leisure. With temperance and charity the faithful will see to it that they avoid the excesses and violence sometimes associated with popular leisure activities. In spite of economic constraints, public authorities should ensure citizens a time intended for rest and divine worship. Employers have a similar obligation toward their employees.”

If I am going to a game, am I not supporting all those people’s decision to work on Sunday? The custodians, food shops, camera people, etc. This game could be on different days of the week, but in the American culture, it seems traditional to have the games on Sundays. Isn’t this causing others to commit sin since they have to work on Sunday?

Many of these games have people swearing and advertising not-so-Godly stuff. The game I may go to will have lots of Spanish swearing, as my roommate informed me. Should I not go on the account that I may get corrupted or that this desecrates Sunday? I don’t speak much Spanish, so does this make the swearing not as bad?

Then again, by going to this game, aren’t I supporting a system that provides others with leisure opportunities, as the Church wants? (by giving the company/institution money)

As long as you still go to mass then I don’t think there is a problem.

What is your intent? To spend time with your friend? To enjoy each others’ company watching something you both enjoy? To strengthen that bond between you?

God gave us the Sabbath (in our case, Sunday) to hang out. First and foremost, we hang out with Him. We visit Him at His house with our brothers and sisters. Then, we hang out with each other, be it family or friends. We spend time together sharing that love which draws us closer together. And, remember: God IS love. To share that love is to share God.

If you are going to this game to excuse you from going to God’s house, then you are going about it all wrong and need to double check your priorities.

:twocents: aaaaannnndddd…I’m done.

dont be to worried about it.
the food stand and the not so good advertising: just dont buy anything from them or the food stands.

Your right to look in the CCC, the best advice is in there. What the players of the sport do is not really something that you should be worried about, if there are catholics that are playing in that game, if they play on sunday, they should be making the time for the Lord, if they dont its not your concern, they are able to make their own decisions.

Why do people automatically assume that because people do other stuff on Sunday’s, they are probably missing church?

That has always baffled me.

I have for the last couple of summers, taken each of my 5 children to a baseball game. Since the Astros (my local team) play most of their Friday and Saturday games at 7, finishing at around 10 or so, I chose to do it on Sundays, when the games start at 1. I go to Mass in the morning, take one of the kids to the game, and go home and enjoy dinner with the family.

Since it is once a year, the kids view it as a real treat. They get to see a major league game and enjoy being part of the crowd, while getting some one on one time with the old man. And I get to share my love for baseball with my children.

I view this as part of me keeping the day sacred as it is a way to create special memories for my children.
