Is it wrong to go to Mass twice on Sunday?

Okay, so Sunday mornings I have CCD at 9:30am, and then it ends at 11am. Before CCD starts, we have 8:30 mass. So, I go to 8:30 with my family. However, this Sunday after the 11am Mass we have to listen to a guest speaker talk to my age group of youth (7-12 graders) and I want to attend. So, I was thinking that I could go with my family to 8:30 Mass, and then go to CCD, then go to 11am Mass by myself. Is it acceptable to go to Mass twice on Sunday? Am I only allowed to receive the Eucharist only once? I know I may sound weird, but I like going to Mass so that’s why I want to go both times.

I’m 14, btw.
 
Of course it is OK for you to go to Mass twice. You may receive twice, as long as it is at Mass (as opposed to receiving it in some other context, like a Communion Service).

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.
 
Priests, cantors, and organists go to more than one Mass all the time.

However, receiving Communion twice in one day is NOT supposed to be a regular thing.

Hmmm, I never heard that. I don’t do it now, but I was for a while, taking my son to Mass in the morning and my mother to Mass in the evening.

Do you have the Canon that says we shouldn’t regularly attend more than one mass a day?

You are allowed to attend mass twice in one day. Someone already gave you a reference about that somewhere above my post. Actually, you can go to mass all day if you want. However, you can only receive communion twice.

I used to attend twice all the time, but I only ever received the Eucharist once. I always thought it sinful (gluttony) to partake of the Eucharist twice, so I just prayed and reflected on the sacrament I had already received when everyone else was receiving second time round.

I’m glad to know that the sin of which I was fearful isn’t really a sin. I’m still not going to pig out on the Eucharist though if I ever get back into the habit of twice-Sunday Mass. :cool:
 
you may receive Eucharist twice on any given day if the second reception is in the context of a complete Mass. what is forbidden is the old practice on the part of some over-zealous people who would run from church to church receiving communion, but never actually attending a whole Mass, in the mistaken belief that “more is better”. If one is in danger of death, one may even receive a third time if he is given the last rites.

But there isn’t a Cannon that says we shouldn’t attend twice, is there?

I don’t do it any more, but going twice was the norm for me for a while. My son and I would go in the morning. Then I would go with my mom in the afternoon.

I never thought it was a problem. Neither my son nor my mom could easily go the other times and I was the driver for both.

No there is not Canon law telling us not to go to Mass more than once. It was the reception of communion more than once which should not be done on a regular basis without good reason. You won’t find a canon law for that but I’ve seen it recommended from a pastoral perspective. I used to go to more Mass more than once a day for family reasons as you describe above and because I am an EMOHC. I only received once unless something happened which made it difficult to avoid reception. Such as serving at the first Mass of the day and someone asking me to serve at the second Mass. I’d feel obligated to receive at the second Mass because they make us go up behind the altar at communion time and it wouldn’t look right for a EMOHC to not receive.

But again, canon law doesn’t prevent it. However we must safeguard against abuses to the Eucharist by people who think they are getting something “more” by receiving twice in one day.

Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.
§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.
§3. While the danger of death lasts, it is recommended that holy communion be administered often, but on separate days.
 
The Church probably wishes that there were more people who went to mass twice a day. I used to go twice a day, on Sundays & also to daily mass, but attended only one mass on weekdays. Tho I am far from perfect, I Love to attend mass also
 
Some priests say three or four masses a day, & they receive at every mass they say

I didn’t say a word about attending more than one Mass a day.

What I said was that receiving Communion twice in one day is supposed to be extraordinary.

Not everything in the Church is legislated for.

I think they have to have special permission to do it though. And to be fair , laity are not priests with priestly responsibilities.

I didn’t see, from the Cannon, that it shouldn’t be a regular thing.

When I was going to Mass twice a day, on Sunday, I received twice. With all the stress that was in my life at the time, I didn’t think it would hurt. 🤷

But you are saying that I shouldn’t be doing that. I just wondered where you got that information.

no there is not, as has been stated, go to as many Masses as you wish, and receive communion at up to two if you wish. If you have questions like this in the future please simply ask your priest.
