I was raised Catholic, but I am feeling a pull toward the Muslim faith. I read Pope John Paul II’s book Crossing the Threshold of Hope, where he stated that this faith is to be respected for its piety. I admire this as well. Is it inappropriate for me to learn more about Islam?

Under the circumstances you describe, in which you are currently experiencing temptation to apostatize from Christianity, yes. Your first obligation is to learn and practice your Catholic faith. Apostasy, for whatever reason, is grave matter and as such is a grave danger to your soul.

As for John Paul II’s words on Islam, he did not mean by them that it was okay for a Catholic to become a Muslim. He meant merely that there are aspects to Islam that are not opposed to right religion, and that those who are already Muslim can be admired for their personal piety (even though we must disagree strongly with their theological convictions).
