My spiritual life isn’t bad I pray a good amount I go to mass Saturday and Sunday and I do the rosary every few days and I know a lot about scripture.

I find rap to be a rather detestable genre of music. It is fixated on the use of vulgar language, demeaning and sexualized commentary about women and hatred of all authority.

You both seem to have posted exactly the same comment! I am not very familiar with rap myself, but whenever I hear it and can make out the words, it generally sounds quite unpleasant.

Oh, okay, see below…
And no it’s not a things rappers do, maybe for Spanish artists idk.
Okay, I checked and it was the 2020 Oscars. It’s really weird. It kind of looks like he really badly needs to go to the loo or something. I don’t think he has any Spanish background.

I didn’t post this. Not sure where it came from!

Presumably there is something wrong with the forum?!

Thanks for clarifying. What we always need to remember is that God welcomes back any and all repentant sinners. He is a God of Mercy. So if this guy repented, who are we to refuse him mercy if God Himself has given him mercy?

He said this in one of his songs that’s how I found out. He repented in the song I’m pretty sure and thank you too.

I’d have to give up listening to Fleetwood Mac after what Stevie Nicks admitted, but… I love listening to “Landslide” when I’m driving by myself.

I would be more concerned that he is talking about his girlfriend’s private issue so publicly. Doesn’t say much about him, other than he isn’t very respectful.

It wasn’t really his girlfriend I forgot who it was i know it wasn’t a stranger and I’m pretty sure the girl was fine with him saying it publicly idk

So my question is, is it wrong to listen to someone to has had an abortion even though they regret?
That question is exceedingly easy to answer: is it wrong to listen to a music artist who has committed a mortal sin?

If nothing else, the answer might get you to pay less attention to music and more to school work, as I doubt there it a musical artist who has not committed a mortal sin.

What do you mean by this answer, is that a yes or no? Your response confused me?

It is really not confusing. I seriously doubt there is an artist out there who has not committed a mortal sin. I am well aware of the seriousness of a mortal sin, including one of abortion, but you seem to have selected out abortion as a sin such that you possibly should not listen to the artist (whom you say, by the way, has repented).

So why the focus on abortion, particularly by someone who has repented? Are you giving a free pass to all other musicians who have committed other mortal sins, and possibly not publicly repented?

So your say I can’t listen or can? Sorry if I’m bothering u.

I am saying that common sense should answer your question.

I am not your parent, so it is not up to me to say what you can or cannot listen to.

Obviously you have a question if it is moral to listen to someone you say had an abortion, and you further say they repented.

;And I asked you, if you think (and it would appear that you might think) that listening to someone who committed a certain mortal sin is wrong, then from that ( as in, by extension) then listening to anyone who has committed a mortal sin (and perhaps even more importantly, not repented) would be wrong.

So do you think that listening to other people who have committed mortal sins might be wrong?

You need to answer that last question first before asking me what I think. Answer me that and then I will answer.

And I do have an answer, but it is not a simple “yes” or “no”.

I am not trying to jerk you around; I am trying to teach you how to think things through.

I’m baffled as to why someone would be concerned about listening to music from an artist who expressed public contrition for doing a bad act.

I could see where you might be uncomfortable if he was going around saying abortion was fine or no big deal, but it sounds like he repented. Why would you be all hung up on the “sin” of someone who repented? We don’t shun people for life because they committed a grave sin once.

It doesn’t have to be though. The rap and hip hop culture has predominantly been associated with these themes but that doesn’t make the style of music bad in itself.
Artists can make rap music with positive themes and some artists are already starting to. It doesn’t have to be about bums and “b__ches”.

"When I was young, me and my mama had beef
Seventeen years old, kicked out on the streets
Though back at the time I never thought I’d see her face
Ain’t a woman alive that could take my mama’s place
Suspended from school, and scared to go home, I was a fool
With the big boys breakin’ all the rules

I shed tears with my baby sister, over the years
We was poorer than the other little kids
And even though we had different daddies, the same drama
When things went wrong we’d blame Mama
I reminisce on the stress I caused, it was hell
Huggin’ on my mama from a jail cell…" (Tupac, Dear Mama)

Christian, please look up an excellent video by Fr Chad Ripperger on The influence of music on YouTube.

When I was your age, I was advised by a family member to stop watching Harry Potter because of witchcraft etc. I felt like such a freak and an outsider for having done this back then. I later went on the bed somewhat relativist in my faith (I got so sick of following the rules and feeling nothing but pain and pointlessness) although I never abandoned it, I was laissez faire about church attendance etc). I would say don’t obsess about the morality of every little thing- the devil will use that against you.

We have to live in the world and not be of it, but it’s influences are subtle so it’s really good and important that you’re reflecting on the culture and what it teaches you.

The point I’m making is that we’re not meant to reject the mediums of the world i.e. music, tv, books, but some of it is terrible for your spiritually. I encourage you strongly to ignore the people here who are saying “you’ll never listen to any music if this is what you’re worried about”. You’re correct the be mindful of the influence their work has on you. Let’s say a musician writes about life in the wilderness and that’s all his music is about, then the fact that you happened to read about how he’s pro choice may mean that listening to his song on the radio isn’t going to influence you the way that listening to rap that demeans women will. So, sure, don’t listen to trash rap. But the guy who’s world is reprehensible? It’s up to you; I’d personally prefer not to give money to people who are evil, but as for consuming music (what your ears listen to) make sure the content of that is well ordered.
