Is it wrong to pray for as long as 2 hours on any given day?

Are we not to take it to God in prayer, and did not Christ himself lament that none could even give Him one hour in prayer?

It depends on whether you’re neglecting other important duties to do so.

Why would it be wrong? Pray unceasingly and let your work be a prayer. All of the saints did this.

Old joke: it’s not okay to work while you pray but it’s okay to pray while you work.

Ask a wise spiritual director who knows you well.

Why are you thinking there might be a problem with that?
I used to go to a prayer group and we prayed for a couple hours. Never thought it was a problem.

I think it’s amazing that someone could shut off their devices and tv to pray for 2 hours. Good for you. God is blessing you.

@MNathaniel St Avila found the time in her very busy life, so why cant we?

Serious question.

@ReaderT Spiritual director cant see to fathom it, so perhaps he has not developed his prayer life enough to be of any help to me?

@redcatholic One can pray all through out the day perhaps, so that it all adds up to about 2 hours, or do it at one time

Don’t feel like I have to do this, its deeply satisfying, and a desire, not a compulsion at all.

Does anyone feel this deep desire or thirst, and has anyone in their life complained or was supportive? and what were the reasons?

No, it is not wrong. It is very good.

However, it would be wrong to use prayer as an excuse for not completing your responsibilities (not saying that you are doing that).

God Bless

I pray for at least 3 hours per day. It is what I am currently being called to do.
Unless you are seriously neglecting other duties, no one can interfere with what God is calling you to do. Why are you concerned about this?

I don’t know how it works in Catholicism, so I should refrain from commenting past this point. In the East, how much you pray is determined by your spiritual father, and his word “goes”, but perhaps it’s different in Catholicism?

“Pray without ceasing” 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

I’d say that praying for two hours is beautiful! 🙂

Only two hours? AYKM? OK, kidding there, but…we are to pray continually. That does not mean structured devotions or on-our-knees prayer. While you are at home, when someone pops into your thoughts, for those we see in news reports, the drivers we see on the streets, the shopper who takes your parking spot - you name it. We can say small but effective prayers all day.

This is sort of a problem. If your spiritual director has instructed you not to pray for that long, then don’t pray that long. And definitely don’t presume that he doesn’t have a good enough prayer life to help you unless you have some very good reason to think that.

Please, allow me to make clear, that my SD is wowed by my love of Christ and my desire to be with Him for 2 hours.

He has never said to me to restrict at all.

I became interested in what others have to say and what others experience, as he seems to not be able to fathom such ability himself.

No doubt, hes much too busy, perhaps?

Thanks to all the kind people who shared with me both public and private that they have this kind of love for Jesus as well, and that perhaps its a matter of having the time.

God bless you all.

Thank you!!!

Not even a priest may have the same walk as you, and its not unheard of either in this regard.

My last SD was removed by the Archdiocese, due to mental illness, so I pray for him daily and keep in touch to encourage him.

Many priests are only human and have faults or shortcomings just like the rest of us and need our prayers too.

Nope, never told me not to.

I said that HE cant fathom that…meaning for HIM.

I asked for others peoples thoughts on it.

I’m not too good with English at times.

I apologize for not being the best at expressions, but now I am making it very clear I hope.

Ah, then I apologize, I misinterpreted. If he didn’t forbid you, did he recommend an amount of time to pray? (Also I’m sorry that I may misinterpret because I am not Catholic) 👍
