Is it wrong to support civil unions???

I was wondering if it is wrong to support non religious civil unions. It seems to me that the catholic ban on supporting gay marriage means church marriages. Is it wrong to vote for a candidate (like a libertarian) that supports the homosexuals ability to choose something??? I definitely don’t support any catholic homosexual marriages, but I didn’t know if it would be wrong to support a different thing like civil unions. I don’t know if this is a separation of church or state thing, or if it is something I just can’t support based on Catholic belief.
