A professional I hired a few years back really did a lousy job., in fact I debated for a long time whether to turn her in to the appropriate disciplinary body about it, but I did not have the time to pursue it with vigor.

I just found out this person scammed 5 other people that did report this lousy con artist. They reported her. She is currently going to be facing a ton of serious charges against her that will likely result in her inability to ever be in her profession again.

First question: did I mess up by not reporting her?

second question: I cracked up and got a real kick out of hearing about her problems - is that wrong too?

third question: Its too late now for me to report her, but I am thinking about attending these procedings to gloat and smile while watching her get hammered.

How bad are these feelings I am having? Gotta know now since confession is at 3:00 today.

No one should gloat over the downfall of a sinner. After all, there but for the grace of God go I. Yes? 😉

It is proper to be happy she will get her just rewards in this life for bilking people out of their money, but we ought to pray for her repentance so that she will inherit eternal life.

It’s never too late to turn her in but you’d better be prepared to answer the question, Why didn’t you do it sooner? and take the consequences.

It sounds to me like your concience is bothering you and you want to make it stop but it’s going to cost you to do so and you’re reluctant to take the heat.

Got it. Its a fine line I guess. I did pray afterward for God to forgive me for doing cartwheels when I read it, and I thought that was enough.

Guess I have to pray for her now too. No problem. 👍

Yeah, it is too late to turn her in per the civil and criminal venues.

My concience only bothered me for a milisecond since at that time it was a choice between filing paperwork and blah blah, or taking care of my sister who had just gotten out of the hospital. No problems in saying, hey I did the right thing with that one.

But, I dont know what its gonna cost me now, except my time going to the proceedings to see her get nailed.

It is a fine line in rejoicing when a perpetrater is caught and their crimes are stopped and relishing in the crimminals downfall. My Ex-BIL was arrested & convicted for molesting my neices (one his bio, one his step). My anger prevented me from praying for him for a few months. I knew I was guilty and eventually went to confession. And some ill comments were made about his prison stay and cellmates. We were happy when his cell was robbed by his fellow prisoners, happy when he got sent to one of the roughest prisons in the state.

I know it should have been enough just to want him to serve his time but for a while we all felt he needed to suffer as he made the girls suffer. Prison to me just did not seem to do that…and then it happened. The judge ordered that he could not obtain any information about the girls or their brother for HIS lifetime. Even when he is on parole, he cannot communicate with or about them or any furture heirs. If one of them wants to see him, then the kid must see the judge first. Why did that make it better?? BC I have sen those girls grow into beautiful young women who work hard to help others in this situation. The brother will grow up without the cycle repeating itself. And he will miss out on those precious children.

Now I pray for him. I pray bc he will miss those kids, he will forever be marked as a pedophile and humiliated whereever he goes. It will not be an easy road in 14 years when he is released.

Wow. That story is bone chilling.

Um, did I mention I only just found out today? Today. I am still processing the information in my head.

Just keeping tabs on what is happening can’t be a sin unless, perhaps, you are engaging in Schadenfreude.

Schadenfreude: Happiness at the misfortune of others.

Like the Broadway song!

Got it. Thanks!

Well, I am happy the people who got ripped off are going to know there is justice in the world sometimes, And I dont think thats wrong.

“second question: I cracked up and got a real kick out of hearing about her problems - is that wrong too?”

It’s certainly a human reaction!

Relating the question to my own life… I have been dealing lately with my love of scandal, and where to draw a line. I have chosen, for instance, not to look at a couple of websites that have stories about stupid people who get their comeuppances, because I realized that I read them purely to enjoy the scandal, and to be able to say, “God, I thank thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers…” (Luke 18:11 RSV)

I also quit watching the TV show, “Cops,” for the same reason.

If I were in your shoes, I’d have the same reaction you did, for sure! And I *hope *that I would then regret it, pray for the person, and take my “schadenfreude” to confession.

Your sister in Christ,

Ruthie

Damascus:

I’m sorry that I missed the time for your confession and that I’m so late in the discusion…

The first question - Would this unscrupulous contractor have had the opportunity to scam these five people if you would have filled out the paperwork and turned her in? If would would have done so, would it have made it more difficult for her to commit these crimes? Truthfully, how difficult would it have been to have turned her in to the appropriate agency? Or, Are you magnifying the amount of hassle involved in an attempt to justify your inaction?

The section question - We are supposed to be glad that evil and unscrupulous people are taken out of circulation and are kept from harming other people while being given a chance to repent, but we are never allowed to gloat over the fate of wrongdoers. The Verba Senorum are replete with instances of men who are far holier than any of us on this board calling attention to their own sins instead of judging those of their brothers.

Damascus, I am far too sinful and prideful to tell you what to do, but I’m sure that your confessor or your spiritual director can provide appropriate counsel and direction.

Your Brother in Christ, Michael

Gloating may be a bit over the top, but it is satisfying to see some wrong doers get caught and get a fair punishment.

I see nothing wrong in getting a ‘kick’ out of justice being served. We are not supposed to hate our enemies, but we are supposed to pray that they repent and turn around their lives.

As long as we do not act out in revenge and are charitable in victory then we need not fear that we are overdoing it. We must be careful to forgive from the heart and thus temper our celebration. But we are not restricted from being happy that justice is being served. In other words, smile and be content but don’t dance in the streets.

I can accept this. And no one would want to see me dance anyway. I dont have the “beat” so the laugh would be on me!😃
