is Jack Chick still relevant in protestant circles?
just got done reading smokescreens by jack chick. what a read. it smacks of conspiracy theories that have been going on especially since the 1960s. i have read almost identical theories about the mormons the jews, the rockefellers and the international bankers. cant believe this guy is still credible. just insert the group you love to hate and walahh! their you have it! the reason for all the worlds ills! apparently the jesuits in his view are responsible for communism, the holocaust, every persecution you can think of and:eek: they are coming for america next! last i heard it was the mormons who were going to take over the world. or was it the jews? hold it! i got it:newidea:its the little green men in saucers! do any of my protestant friends still believe this guy is credible? just wondering.

While Jack Chick has never been credible, there are many who lap up everything he publishes. You will see on ebay and other internet sights, people who not only sell his tracts but also those who support him and his “work” giving him praise with no end.

There is a good review of his paranoia on the Jimmy Akins website. Jimmy met Jack at the opening of Chick’s film. read about it on Jimmy’s webpage, Defensor Fidei…

hi filioque. looked it up. that was great! gotta be alot for him to sell all those tracts. God bless you and yours:)

Jack Chick has only ever had credibility in Fundamentalist/Evangelical circles, which do not make up the bulk of Protestantism. I would venture to say that he holds no credibility at all with most Protestants.

Only the wacko’s would ever put any credence into the chick garbage. That stuff is NOT the stuff of christianity.

I have a co-worker who I consider to be a very stand-up guy and a man with a Christian heart. He is a Baptist and attends a Central Baptist Church. I attended a Wednesday service with him as part of an agreement to get him to come see Mark Shea speak at my church. I was very surprised to see that his church eagerly distributes Chick Tracts. He describes them as “eye opening”…

I was needless to say, very dismayed by that…

Most of my Protestant friends think he’s nuts. I did meet one guy who liked some of his tracts (mostly the ones that focus on evangelizing), but also admitted that sometimes he gets a little extreme.

I’ve never met anyone who takes him seriously, and I went to a fundamentalist/charismatic High School.

Personally I find them entertaining if I’m in the right mood, knowing full well that he thinks I’m going to hell.

I imagine it depends on what you mean when you say “relevant”.

Is Jack Chick taken seriously by theologians, scholars, mainstream protestant denominations? No.

Is he taken seriously by thousands and thousands of people? Yes.

So in that sense, I think he is still relevant. I find Chick tracts all over the place, and that means that someone is going to the effort of ordering them and distributing them.

It’s sad, really. I wish I could meet some of these people face to face so we could have a real discussion about their misconceptions. It’s hard to defend the faith to a comic book!

I’ve participated in several threads on various mostly Protestant boards, including in forums specifically dedicated to Fundamentalists, and forums dedicated to Evangelicals. Even on Fundamentalist forums, his ideas have very little support, and most posters slam him. Some say some of his material is good enough to use. I’d go along with that, though I’d screen it very carefully. I want nothing to do with any of the ones attacking Catholics, rock music, roleplaying games, etc., or pushing wacky conspiratorial theories.

Jack t chick’s ideas are mainly adhered to by very fundamentalist Christians who think the Jesuits started Islam, communism, fascism, ww1, ww2, sunk the titanic, assinated JFK and Lincoln etc. no historian or theologian I know of takes such fanciful conspiracy theories seriously. That having been said a wide variety of protestants still do use his more mainstream tracts for witnessing.

god knows how the jesuits started islam since it came into existence some 700 years before the jesuits existed but jack t chick doesnt let a thing like history get in the way of his theories

Catholic answers has a good refutation of Jack T Chick if your interested called “ the nightmare world of Jack T Chick”

I have met so many fundamentalist morons who 100% believe his conspiracy theories, its like those Muslims who think the Jews did 911 there is no evidence they did and its based just on personal prejudice. Same with cahtolics being responsible for all the ills of the world. Its prejudiced hatespeech

Mr chick has yet to produce 1 scrap of evidence that could in any way prove his theories so as far as I am concerned they should all be consigned to the realms of fantasy.

Having been a Christian and in an evangelic church for 8 years I have never heard of the Protestant and/or Catholic superheroes and super villians like Scott Hahn or Jack Chick until I joined this website last year.

I take it both wrote some books but neither wrote The Book.

Your answer is typical. To me, it seems to be an almost regional thing. We see tons of Chick tracs here in Alabama, but I have relatives in other places and they never see them

I saw some of his stuff when I was in seminary in Georgia, but never where I currently live. His stuff is at best entertaining, and at worst the work of a nut. But I’ve never met anyone who took him seriously.

A wack job who preys on the fears of people struggling to make sense of the world around them and longing for a simpler age.

My wife was just sent a Chick video on youtube from her fundamentalist father about two weeks ago. It was the one with a lady named Mary who goes through her life as a Catholic and dies not knowing if she is saved. It’s the one that says Catholics are citizens of two different countries, the Vatican and America  and that we can’t be good Americans because our loyalties are to the Vatican first.

So he must be some what relavent, at least to one Protestant.

God bless

I don’t think that Jack Chick is relevent to Baptist. I never heard of him until I came to this forum. I do not think that many other Baptist have either
