**For those of you who think Jack Chick is irrelevant - he is the most widely-distributed author in the history of publishing. **

I walked into a very well-known chain Protestant Bible Book store on the West Coast and asked for his best-known anti-Catholic materials. Although there was nothing on display, I was told by the employee to follow her to the back room. There, I saw a wealth of his publications and was told to freely browse through it.

People may outwardly laugh at Jack Chick - but his ideas are taught by almost every Fundamentalist and Evangelical denomination I have come in contact with.

Of course - there are the really bizarre tracts that accuse the Church of having pagan influences from ancient Sumeria and Babylon that are not as widely believed by many Protestants.

Sounds like the florist on The Wire when Boodie couldn’t find the setting for Dee’s funeral he was shown the secret gangsta collection in the back room.

So If I follow this right protestants really have secret rooms where we plot? I guess we are sometimes allies with Dawkins and Hitchens when you are not looking also. In fact we have named Chick protestant pope in our secret meetings.

The best criticism I have seen of Jack Chick is the Cthulhu-Chick Parody:

The whole thing contains a couple of naughty words so I won’t link to it. You can Google for it if you want to see it all.
Believer: “You must worship and sacrifice at the altar to appease the appetites of the Elder Gods! Then may you hope for a fast death!”

Priest: “Ph’nglul mghw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn!”

Believers: “CTHULHU FHTAGN!”

Witness: Gasp … This can’t be!

Believer: “Chant invocations from the NECRONOMICON, the book of dead names written by the Mad Monk, Abdul Alhazred!”

Believer: “Only then … on the dreaded day when they rise … Will you be eaten first!”

rossum

(Who has been looking for an excuse to post "Ph’nglul mghw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn!”)

I’ve always wondered about his obsession with the Jesuits. You would think if there was this group of all-powerful priests, with its tendrils in all aspects of governement, who were out to conquer the world for the Pope, they would be a lot more orthodox than 90% of the Jesuits you hear about out there… Most, anymore, seem to be little more than secular academics in Roman collars.

Hey - he’s not the most widely published and distributed author for no reason.
Feeling a little bit guilty? Or did I hit too close to home?

By the way - I never said “all Protestants”. I don’t
** make such sweeping generalizations.**

it would help if we knew what chain of protestant bookstores you are talking about, if that is allowed. appreciate it my friend. God bless you and yours.🙂

Not sure that would be allowed but I’ll PM you with the info.

I suspect that the ratio of:

(folks and churches who use Chick tracts for evangelistic material)
/
(folks and churches who actually believe the wackier stuff coming from some Chick tracts)

is rather large. I at one time was in a church that was part of the numerator of this ratio.

Reasons for this ratio are:
  • A perception that the comic book style might be more apt to be read than other styles. Chick is the only one I know of that uses the comic style.
  • They do present the gospel of Jesus Christ, albeit in Christianese.
  • They are easily accessible.
  • Christians are often ignorant and/or brain dead to the wacky stuff some tracts contain.
  • Christians are not sensitive to the offensive nature of some Chick tracts.
  • Not all Chick tracts are wacky. I remember the “This was your life one” still, and don’t recall that specific one as wacky.
Anyway, I would never use them now myself, but I would not equate use of them to belief in their wacky ideas.
