The wording of, “Before Abraham was, I Am” is changed to “I have been” in their translation so it’s futile. Here’s some theology to catch them off guard though:
Their contention is that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation, therefore He would be the first thing God created. They get this from Colossians 1:15
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
Nevertheless, God calls David His firstborn even though David was the youngest of his brothers:
Psalm 89:20 I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him…
Psalm 89:27 I shall make him firstborn the highest of the kings of the earth.
And they also changed the wording of the remainder of Colossians:
1:16 For by { That is, by means of; or b in b } him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him.
17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
They insert the word “other” in brackets to change the meaning. If we look at the Greek, the word “other” is non-existent. And regardless our Theology makes more sense because God is clear
Isaiah 44:24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: "I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself
Notice God says He did this on His own, and not through the means of another. God made all things on His own, Jesus being fully God as made clear in Isaiah.
I’ll add these:
Isaiah 44:66*"Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts:
'I am the first and I am the last,
And there is no God besides Me.
Rev 1:17When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, 18*and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive
