Is Jesus Omniscient in Scripture?

Concerning Matthew 4:12

Why did Jesus have to* hear *that John had been arrested? Wouldn’t he have already known? It seems as though Jesus went into Galilee with the knowledge of John’s arrest.

Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee

Jesus is fully human and fully divine and we are to be careful not to ‘commingle’ his two natures. In order for Jesus to be fully human He must make human choices. If He knows the future then He essentially would have no choices to make hence undermining His human nature.

How the two natures co-exist and yet don’t commingle is a mystery to me. This is really a speculative theology question more than a Sacred Scripture question.

I enjoy all your questions. Maybe because I have a mind that continually asks questions also - and especially about Scripture passages. I hope you’re posing all these questions to Jesus too. He’s almost always the first one I go to with my questions.

Anyway, in regards to your question here. Consider the possibility that Jesus may already have known of John’s arrest, but had determined not to leave for Galilee and begin His public preaching until John’s arrest became public knowledge - that is, when the people would begin talking about it. It’s as tho Jesus did not want to compete, so to speak, with John the Baptist for the people’s attention. While John was still free and active, it was the time of preparation for Jesus. (cf Luke 1:76-77 …for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people in the forgiveness of their sins,)

Again, just my thoughts.

I understood your question - if He is fully human and does not have full knowledge of everything *in His humanity *then wouldn’t He need to be told about the arrest? Later on He is also informed of Lazarus’ death. Same issue applies - He had to be told…John 11:1-6

Perhaps he didn’t want to creep people out and simply show up, “Hey guys, I had this weird feeling that John was imprisoned and is going to be beheaded soon…”
