Is joining a political group contrary to my faith?

I’m involved with organizing a controversial political group for two counties. We had a small informal meeting that started with a prayer and feel the direction our group is headed is the right direction. Our membership has skyrocketed in just two weeks with over one hundred members now and the second meeting is in a few weeks. Is there anything contrary to my faith in being active in a political group?

In principle, joining a political group is morally neutral. For the most part, you are free to join any political party or group you wish. Only if the party or group was so morally corrupt so as to have no redeeming merit whatsoever, or if the party or group sought to trample human rights or to unjustly overthrow civil authority, would there be reason to say that a Catholic should not belong. If you have concerns about the positions and goals of the group you’ve joined, I can only recommend that you discuss those concerns with a priest or spiritual director whose orthodoxy and spiritual maturity you trust.

Please keep in mind that this advice applies equally to all political parties and groups.
