Is Joseph Smith a prophet like Mohammed?

It was vigorously argued in another thread that Mohammed was indeed a Prophet of the Judeo-Christian God. The logic used in Mohammed’s defense seems to apply also to Joseph Smith. If so, then why would Islam (or Baha’i really) be the final (most recent???) say on the matter of God? Wouldn’t Mormanism have rightful claim to that?

Yes. Both used religion to gain secular power, changing “God’s rule” to suit their actions as needed, with followers (and themselves) employing violent means. Joe Smith was less successful, since the US Army wasn’t having any of his royal aspirations on American soil.

However, even he can’t claim the most recent title, since we have people claiming these things even up to our day.

Yes, if you accept Muhammed as a prophet it stands to reason you must also accept J.Smith.

Both claim revelation form some “Angel” that interacted with them.

And Mormons dont blow things up and are really nice people. So if anything, J.Smith has even more credibility than Muhammed.

Agree. Was hoping the other poster would pop over since his use of “got 1.6 billion followers” argument could be applied to Smith and I’m curious what he has to say.

These men founded religions that I do not believe in. That doesn’t mean that I don’t respect the people who follow these men. I would not say to a Muslim, Mormon aor Bahai that their leaders were “false” prophets. But, I personally do not believe that any one them is a prophet.

I am a Catholic. The founder of my Religion is Christ. He is not a prophet. He is God.

Absolutely. In many respects, Joseph Smith was an “American Mohammed” and Brigham Young tried to continue it in Utah. He was successful for a time, but fortunately the US Army put a stop to it.

Joseph Smith is a prophet like Mohammed - a false prophet.

Well, Mormon’s believe that God lives somewhere near the planet Kolob - which some claim is a the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The earth was created near Kolob and then decided to take up residence at it’s current location.

So there’s that.

There are false prophets but I am not in a position and don’t have the knowledge to declare anyone a false prophet or a false Christ. I leave that judgement up to God.

When I talk about Religion, I talk about the wonder of God, the beauty of Mary, the saving Grace of God, the Rosary, the life and death of Christ, the joy I find in His love. The list of wonders and joys I find in Christ are enough to occupy my mind for an eternity.

To even say “false” prophet it is say that these men are in some form or another prophets.

They are not prophets - false of otherwise.

They are just men.

It’s a fair point. Though I think one thing to consider is that Muslims consider Mohammad to be not just a prophet, but the final prophet from the God.

That’s a train of thought the Mormons don’t tend to share, particularly members of the two largest groups of LDS. As they consider every president of the LDS Church (or Community of Christ) to be the currently ordained prophet from God. Joseph Smith wasn’t just the founder of their churches and a prophet, but the first of a line of prophets up to the present day.

I guess my objection is: Terms like “False Prophets” come with enormous baggage. They are words that push buttons, cause arguments, are found insulting and never have a coherent definition. I have thought of the false prophets mentioned in the New Testament as infiltrators of the early Christian Churches.

I agree that Mohammad, Bahaullah and Joseph Smith are religious figures who have misled many with false ideas about Jesus and the Church. Calling them religious figures is okay. That term takes away some of the power that has been given to them by the word prophet.

I know that their followers believe that they are prophets.
