Horsetotem,

The answer to your question is:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

She advocates praying to the Goddess Sophia, among many other heretical beliefs. Run from her books as fast as you can.

Do you have a source for that info about Joyce Rupp? A priest friend of mine is always sending me quotes and prayers from her.

I’ve seen a lot of quotes and prayers written by Joyce Rupp circulated by well-intentioned Catholics.
However, once I read an article she wrote on the goddess Sophia, and then skimmed through her book Prayers to Sophia, I realized she qualifies as New Age, not Catholic.

I share my discovered wisdoms with you in order to encourage you on your own inner way and to spark the recognition of your wisdoms that are waiting to be welcomed by you…. My hope is that you will gather the gift of time and take the journey to the inner world where Sophia (Wisdom) waits for you. — Joyce Rupp *the Star in my Heart *

You could check her own words on her site joycerupp.com/
She has an article further down about “Desperately seeking Sophia”

Give me a break! I was just wondering about the Church’s position on Joyce. Sophia is Greek for wisdom and she applies the term to God in reference to her writings. There’s nothing heretical about it. Her experience of God is obviously one from a feminist perspective. Heresy? WHATEVER!

Horsetotem,

You are right that Sophia is the word for Wisdom. But what Joyce Rupp does is make Sophia into a Deity. While at the same time denying (by ignoring) God the Father because she prefers a female God.

True God is not male nor female but spirit. But… I will use an analogy to explain my next thought.

When I was a child I used to watch the TV show “Bewitched.” It always impressed me that the ultimate insult that Endora gave to Darrin was to refuse to call him by his name.

Jesus told us to call God “Father”. Also as is obvious, Jesus is a male. So by refusing to call God Father, Rupp is insulting to God in the very least.

But her books go far beyond this one issue. She takes her feminist beliefs to the level of heresy.

I was a former feminist, myself. So I know it when I see it.

And I was also once an ultra-conservative Catholic. Jesus lived in a distinctly patriarchal society. His image of God as ‘Father’ offended the clerics of his time, as the first son of any male was the lone inheritor of the entire estate, hence, Jesus stood to gain all God’s kingdom. But he also opened it up for all of us in that we are also heirs to God’s kingdom. So Jesus’ proclomation of God as Father was significant for his time. However, we’re not living in 1st century Palestine. While the image of God as Father is still applicable today to many, the image of God as creator, as spouse (see any number of books: Rev., Is., Song of Songs), as mother (see Is. 42:14) and even mid-wife (see Deut. 32:18) are also viable images of a personal God, like Joyce Rupp’s. And so to this day, God’s image continues to change for each individual Christian that makes up the one body of Christ, the Church.

All I was really trying to do was substantiate a rumor that she had been officially censured by the church.
