Is killing bugs a sin?

I suppose I’m a serial bug squasher.
I confess.
Not a big concern of mine, although I love praying mantis. They look at me and I look at them, I suppose we confound each other.

The Praying Mantis is cute. I like their triangular faces and bulgy eyes. In finding one I picked him up to put him where he would be safe. Those legs of his felt prickly since they have spikes to catch their prey. (He had been hanging on the screen door.)

I would imagine that even killing bugs for pleasure would be at most venial, unless it was rooted in a general malice towards God’s work of creation (and not just a dislike of bugs), but I’m no priest…
I would tend to agree. I would even support the systematic extermination of certain species of insects, such as mosquitoes, and other invasive species that have no natural predators.
I would have to imagine that purposefully causing the extermination of a select species would be pretty sinful. Population control, no, but wiping them off the face of the planet (on purpose) would be very sinful.

God created all life for a reason, even if we don’t see it. Even the mosquitoes have a purpose in God’s creation.

I hope not. That would be bad for me (and I expect for exterminators as well).

I had a pet cricket in my apartment for several weeks. He must have died, because I don’t hear him any more. I saw him several times, but had no interest in killing him. I enjoyed his song. Some people like to kill box elder bugs, but I think they are pretty. I don’t kill honey bees, because my father was a beekeeper. I do have a fruitfly trap in my kitchen, though. OH, BTW, I am 67 years old, and don’t often post on such simple subjects, even though I like the simple things in life.

Cockroahes fear me! But I was shaken by the three and a half incher in my classroom the other day…shudder city!

Stink bugs are an invasive species and need to be eradicated quickly.

They really are a menace. I might just have to put seminary on hold and become an exterminator if they keep getting inside my house.
