Is kissing a sin?

But isn’t even kissing after marriage a sin?! Because if you kiss your wife/husband, you desire them?! How dare people have desire for things!

Married people are only allowed to hold hands 3.25674 seconds a day, must keep eyes averted at all times, and sleep in two different zip codes while wearing chastity belts. Sex is only allowed on the 2nd Wednesday of every third February at exactly 11:34 am, and only allowed for the purpose of procreation. If a baby doesn’t result from that, then it is a mortal sin. 😛
I have not laughed as much for a long time. :D:D

👍

You made me spurt out my coffee! 😃

I agree with Cat. People who love each other can show a degree of affection, in a loving non lustful, non sinful way.

One of the sweetest stories I heard was during the days of my Father’s funeral and wake.

My parents had spent years of their engagement in two different countries.

The didn’y have Skype or IM just Air Mail letters, that sometimes would take a month to get there.

Finally they were reunited before the wedding

My uncle, (mom’s younger brother) shared a story that no one knew. The day they were finally reunited, he walked into the kitchen, and found my mom and dad kissing, so he quickly left the kitchen.

My father loved my mother in such a beautiful way, all his married life. There is no way I could believe that sweet, loving kiss was anything but a show of love.

And Dad never received the Eucharist without confessing prior.

Anna, I know you may be expecting a black-and-white answer, that either kissing is a sin outside marriage or it’s not. I think that the act of kissing, by itself, is not a sin, it really depends on whether the kiss causes a person to lust or not. That makes kissing different than some other intimate acts, some of which (such as, obviously, “going all the way” or whatever the slang is these days), are inherently sinful outside marriage, are some of which are inherently sinful even within marriage, which, considering your age, I won’t go into detail here!

Now, many people believe kissing before marriage would be sinful for them because it would cause them to lust. That doesn’t mean it would be a sin for you personally. In some cultures, any touching, even holding hands, is considered inappropriate before marriage. Many such cultures also think dating by itself is a near occasion of sin, and practice arranged marriage. While some Catholics might think arranged marriage is a good thing, most would prefer to choose their own wife or husband.

I think that for most people, a quick peck on the cheek or lips wouldn’t cause lust, but “French” kissing where you stick your tongue in the other person’s mouth, or kissing and cuddling for a long time (as in many minutes), would cause many people to get “turned on”. Also, boys tend to get turned on a lot easier than girls do, so I think many girls need to be aware that just because something doesn’t cause them to lust doesn’t mean it’s not a problem for the boy.

I hope this helps!

Your taking some of the Rascalkings best lines away! 👍

Rock on girl…

Obviously different people get sexually aroused by different things. But if kissing isn’t an issue in that regard for either of the participants, I see it being an acceptable pre-marital expression of feelings.

Whenever anyone asks “Is X or Y sinful” remember that we here on the this site are not probably not priests, some are over scrupulous, some are delusional, and others are simply in total denial of what is healthy and what is not. So take what everyone says with a grain of salt. If your really curious about what is or is not sinful, talk to a priest.
😃 Personally, I think I am in the “delusional” category 😉

Seriously, I would also recommend speaking to a priest. This seems to have a lot of gray area, and I don’t fancy making a guess at an answer. God bless.

Peace,
Trinity

Oh goodness! I didn’t mean to insult anyone, I was just trying to give a general warning about believing everything on the internet!

OK, but let’s remember what the original post asked:
Last Sunday at church a overheard a group of girls talking about their older sister’s relationships. One girl mentioned her sister kisses her boyfriend and another girl said “Oh that’s a sin, To kiss before your married.” So I was wondering if it’s a sin just to kiss a boy before your married?

1)** It is not a sin to kiss before you are married.** It is not a sin to kiss when you are not engaged. It is not a sin to kiss when you have not even discussed marriage. Nevertheless, kissing someone to whom you are not married carries certain risks. It is your obligation to take those risks into consideration. Those risks are:
a) The risk of inviting lust in yourself–that is, of regarding another person as an object for gratifying your own physical desires.
b) The risk of encouraging any other vice in yourself. If kissing a boy makes you think you are better than other girls whom he does not want to kiss, then that isn’t a good kiss.
c) The risk of inviting lust or other vices in another
d) The risk of harming a pre-existing relationship between two other people, even if they are not married, but especially if they are.

In other words, for a kiss to be innocent, you do have to think about the possible consequences to yourself and others, outside the immediate appropriateness of the kiss itself.
  1. It is not lust for a man to be attracted to a woman or a woman to be attracted to a man. It is lust when that attraction is entertained as a reason to use someone as a thing, as a means of self-gratification, rather than to be in relationship with them as a spouse, or even to treat oneself or one’s sexuality as a thing to be exploited, rather than a gift from God meant to give God glory.
  2. Marriage does not make it OK to consider another person as an object. It is possible to kiss your spouse in a way that is wrong.
  3. A kiss may be used to express affection, but even deep affection may not be used as an excuse for actions that are objectively wrong. If you really care about the person, you put their integrity and their relationship with God first. Show them that you care about them, in every way, even if that means giving up some kisses.
Overall, OP, just remember that chastity isn’t only about restricting marital actions to married persons. It is much more than that. You might want to get into the Catechism of the Catholic Church and read more. Here is an excerpt:
2339 Chastity includes an apprenticeship in self-mastery which is a training in human freedom. The alternative is clear: either man governs his passions and finds peace, or he lets himself be dominated by them and becomes unhappy. “Man’s dignity therefore requires him to act out of conscious and free choice, as moved and drawn in a personal way from within, and not by blind impulses in himself or by mere external constraint. Man gains such dignity when, ridding himself of all slavery to the passions, he presses forward to his goal by freely choosing what is good and, by his diligence and skill, effectively secures for himself the means suited to this end.”
2340 Whoever wants to remain faithful to his baptismal promises and resist temptations will want to adopt the means for doing so: self-knowledge, practice of an ascesis adapted to the situations that confront him, obedience to God’s commandments, exercise of the moral virtues, and fidelity to prayer. “Indeed it is through chastity that we are gathered together and led back to the unity from which we were fragmented into multiplicity.”
**2341 **The virtue of chastity comes under the cardinal virtue of temperance, which seeks to permeate the passions and appetites of the senses with reason.
2342* Self-mastery is a long and exacting work.* One can never consider it acquired once and for all. It presupposes renewed effort at all stages of life. The effort required can be more intense in certain periods, such as when the personality is being formed during childhood and adolescence.
2343 Chastity has laws of growth which progress through stages marked by imperfection and too often by sin. “Man . . . day by day builds himself up through his many free decisions; and so he knows, loves, and accomplishes moral good by stages of growth.”

Men kissing men in the Bible is no more than what happens in many countries to this day - it is a common greeting to kiss on each cheek. Your comment is just a distraction from the original question.

Kissing in a male/female relationship between those who are not married to each other can be innocent or it can be a mortal sin. Chaste kissing is fine. Deep kissing (known as french kissing) is a mortal sin. All sins against the 6th Commandment are mortal because of how sacred sex is.
I think I addressed the point perfectly. The act of kissing clearly isn’t a sin it is a cultural display of affection and anyone who says otherwise is clearly being foolish and trying to simplify the issue of guarding your heart against the real sin of lust. If someone says “Kissing is a sin” they are wrong and that is that. If they “Lustful kissing is a sin” then that is completely different and the sin of lust is still the real sin, not the kissing itself. The act of kissing is undeniably not a sin.

As far as I’m concerned if the Catechism doesn’t list it as a mortal sin then it’s not. Those who are saying it is a mortal sin are probably being too conservative. .
The Catechism is not a catalog of possible sins. But lustful kissing would actually be included under lust which is included there.

Chaste, and reasonable kisses are fine.

Some kisses (often as portraryed in movies etc are not…and are for marriage) are not.

Yes someone can commit a mortal sin via kissing…such is true.

But an ordinary chaste kiss …such is not a sin.

It is not a matter of being “conservative” but of asking what does the Church teach and how does orthodox Catholic moral theology discuss the matter.

  1. Marriage does not make it OK to consider another person as an object. It is possible to kiss your spouse in a way that is wrong.:
Just to make sure I understand you: I understand that it is wrong to treat one’s spouse as a mere “object” for pleasure. But beyond that distinction, it can be seriously sinful to kiss your spouse?

LOL I think some very conservative Catholics need to read that and laugh at themselves.😉

But laughing is pleasurable. And pleasure is a sin. We must all hit ourselves with a wrench every 3 seconds and eat low-protein gruel. And listen to horrible church choirs (the real reason no Catholic choir can be listenable, it is penance for our sins). 😛

They probably think “that CountrySinger is a smart woman, following Catholic teaching.” And then start chanting “One of Us! One of Us!” And then start chasing me like zombies in a cheap horror movie. locks door My cats will protect me. They hate anything religious.

Unless your intention is seriously sinful, no. By that I mean that if you kiss your spouse the way Judas kissed Jesus, then yes, that’s a mortal sin! Intention counts, as always.

A kiss is appropriate between spouses. The only thing that can louse it up is intention or mitigating circumstances, such as a lack of charity or a lack of propriety.

Even spouses should not have to be told to “get a room.” I don’t mean that this is necessarily lustful. I mean that this falls under the general rule that you don’t enjoy nice things in front of others when you can’t extend the hospitality of sharing. Maybe you have a serious need to use NFP, and the kissing is such that it will get in the way of that.

I would hope this is getting into the realm of “c’mon, use common sense.” Even if we rightly have no scruples, we have to consider any present who have scruples, that kind of thing. As St. Paul might have said, “But make sure that this liberty of yours in no way becomes a stumbling block to the weak.” 1 Cor. 8:9

So kissing isn’t a sin as long as the kiss doesn’t cause anyone to lust?

So kissing isn’t a sin as long as the kiss doesn’t cause anyone to lust?
You have to judge whether the kiss is putting you into a near occasion of sin, and lust isn’t the only one to consider. Of course, experience is a teacher, but you can’t judge the morality of an action by the effect. How do you know the effect before you decide what to do? You have to use some prudence in considering the likely outcome. Therefore, with regards to kissing, you have to be old enough and mature enough to use your judgement.

You’re young, so you aren’t a great judge of the likely outcome of a particular situation. Kissing is fun, yes, but it is habit-forming. With thrilling habits, what started out to be a thrill becomes tame. You want things to be more intense, more thrilling. As you probably know, too, the stronger a habit becomes, the less control you have over it.

This is what purity programs are for: they give you some guidelines. It is a* lot *better than learning the hard way.

I think you can see why some of our wiser young people put off kissing until they’re older. There can be a lot more in a sweet innocent little kiss what meets the eye. It is not something to rush into.

Let’s see…first kiss at 15, moved on to the next frog at 16, kissed him too. At 17, I thought I had kissed “the one”…but then our family moved…so it wasn’t him. At 17 1/2, kissed the next frog…who I thought would be “the one”…he wasn’t. At 20, I met my DH and kissed him…yep…he was and still after 31 yrs…“the one”.

And no kissing isn’t a sin…and young women remember…it is “you” who decides how far it goes. No, means no.
