Are we Catholics allowed to watch this film? After watching Scorcese’s SILENCE I really want to go back and watch Last Temptation of Christ…not sure of the Church’s position.

Thanks and Blessings!

I don’t understand why any Catholic would WANT to watch this offensive and sacrilegious movie. It is not based on the Gospels at all but on a fictional book that totally mocks Christ.

To my knowledge, there is no longer an official list of banned books and movies. Though this is the type of situation where a spiritual advisor would come in handy, Either way though keep in mind that the movie should not trump teachings of the Church.

It’s an abysmal film. I can’t see any reason to watch it.
It’s not art, it’s not entertaining, and doesn’t edify or instruct.
:coffeeread:

I never watched it because of who was in it. Mel Gibson wasn’t it? How could a renowned anti-Semite play the part of Christ.

Glad I never bothered now.

Thank you everyone - especially Eric Pine - as I’m really just trying to find out if its banned. So - is that right? there are no officially banned books/films? I didn’t realize that! Interesting!

Esieffe - The Mel Gibson one you are thinking of is The Passion of the Christ, I believe (also on my list to see)

I’m aware of the controversies surrounding Last Temptation…and of course that it doesn’t represent the Gospels.

Blessings everyone!

No it wasn’t Mel Gibson.

Unfortunately, The Church no longer issues bans on books, movies, etc. But I would be very careful as to what I put in my head.

“The Last Temptation of Christ” or “The Passion of the Christ”. Mel Gibson is not in either movie,

Maybe you should watch “The Passion of the Christ” first and then you may not want to sink to the Last Temptation. I agree, I would never want to see it!! I will watch “The Passion of the Christ” again for Lent. God Bless, Memaw

The Last Temptation of Christ has nothing to do with Mel Gibson, and is a horrible movie. However, he directed Jim Caveziel as Christ in “The Passion of the Christ” which is a wonderful movie.

Actually Gibson does make an appearance in the passion of the Christ. At least his hand does.

Mother Angelica, a Catholic nun and foundress of Eternal Word Television Network, described Last Temptation as “the most blasphemous ridicule of the Eucharist that’s ever been perpetrated in this world” and “a holocaust movie that has the power to destroy souls eternally.”
Pretty strong words from Mother A, don’t you think?
