Is Laughter a sin?

I think this is where the Catholic Church gets a little weird to me. No offense. Laughter is a sin? What do the bible say? I trust the bible more than the spiritual books. Sometimes saints are not always correct.

The Rule of St Benedict does not say laughter is a sin.

Understand the Rule in its proper context.

It has to do with Monks living in a cloister, not lay people and it does not condemn laughter, but useless chat which provokes laughter.

Again, keep in mind this is in the the monastic cloister.

I am not convinced that this is merely why Benedict prescribed it in the Rule. It was a common notion especially as the medievel period came that laughter was indeed a sinful occurence in some schools of theology.

It was never part of Catholic doctrine and as I said, the Rule Of St Benedict was for monastics, not lay people.

I’m a 3rd order Discalced Carmelite, Secular, OCDS.

The Discalved Carmelite’s follow the Rule of St Albert the Great.

In the rule, it says that consumption of meat is prohibited. I asked our spiritual assistant about this and whether I should be a vegetarian. He said, no, that the rule has been reformed. I we followed it as written, we would be able to own one donkey(spelled with an A) as it was outlined.

The Rule of St Benedict is most likely also reformed for contemporary times.

Nowhere in scripture does it say that Jesus laughed. No private revelation indicates so either. To say so is only speculation.
