Is Leviticus 20:13 about homosexuality or pedophilia?

On a Facebook post someone was talking about how the word in Leviticus is “zachar” Which translates to boy rather than man. So a better translation would be “man will not lie with boy” and that the verse is actually about pedophilia rather than homosexuality. She’s not catholic so I can’t just sight the catechism so I’m looking to understand this passage. But also why we think homosexual acts are bad on a scriptural level. Thank you!

The quotation is from Leviticus 20:13, which reads : If a man (Hebrew ish ) lies with a man (Hebrew zakar .) Zakar means male, as opposed to female. It can refer to a human male or to a male animal, as in the passages about the kinds of animal to be sacrificed, but it has nothing to do with age, or with being a boy instead of a man. In grammar, it’s the term for the masculine gender. Elsewhere in the Pentateuch, it’s the word for male in Genesis 1:27, for example, “male and female created he them.”

There was another thread asking the same question just three weeks ago:

"man shall not lie with boy?" Moral Theology
I received this from a high schooler…‘in the original translation of the Bible, it states"‘man shall not lie with boy’, not man shall not lie with man", so pedophilia is a sin, not being gay.’ I responded by asking her what translation, from which language? I know this is probably an erroneous translation, but I am not a Greek, Latin or Hebrew scholar. Can anyone help me respond to her? Thank you!

Yeah, that article’s been making the rounds in the last few months.

But we’re not sola scriptura Protestants, either.
We have moral beliefs that aren’t mentioned in the Bible, such as opposition to genocide and puppy-kicking.

I’m afraid it simply doesn’t make the prohibition against same sex behavior go away.

In the Jewish Study Bible’s English translation from the Masoretic text of the Tanakh, the passage from Leviticus 20:13 reads: “And a man who lies with a male as one lies with a woman, the two of them have done an abhorrent thing. They are doomed to die. Their bloodguilt is upon them.”

The commentary on this same passage from Robert Alters’ The Five Books of Moses, describes the meaning of this passage as follows: “‘as one lies with a woman. The locution, literally ‘the lying with a woman,’ plausibly leads the Talmud in Sanhedrin to characterize the act as ‘putting the brush into a tube,’ – that is, the particular homosexual act of anal penetration.’” (BTW, the Sanhedrin referred to here is the name of a tractate that deals with criminal proceedings found in the Talmud).

Answering you last comment OP.

Homosexual acts (sodomy) are bad because they are against nature, that is, against what God intended to each part of the human body.

Regarding condemnation of sodomy in scriptures, there is at least a handful of passages directly condemning it.

Leviticus 18, 22
Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind, because it is an abomination.
Leviticus 20, 13
If any one lie with a man as with a woman, both have committed an abomination, let them be put to death: their blood be upon them.
1 Corinthians 6, 9-11
Know you not that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, Nor the effeminate, nor liers with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall possess the kingdom of God.
Romans 1, 27
And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men working that which is filthy, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error.
1 Timothy, 9-10
Knowing this, that the law is not made for the just man, but for the unjust and disobedient, for the ungodly, and for sinners, for the wicked and defiled, for murderers of fathers, and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For fornicators, for them who defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and whatever other thing is contrary to sound doctrine,

You are concentrating on a SIDE issue that

This is your fourth post about this video (#5, 8, 12, and 14). You have not yet told us why it is relevant to this thread. The OP is asking about the meaning of a Hebrew word in Leviticus.
