Jimmy B:
Why isn’t, legalized and publically funded abortion, legalized homosexual marriage, embryonic stem cell research, legalized drugs, legalized pornography, legalized protestation, sympathy for heinous criminals and the ACLU on your list of “liberal good things”? And, wasn’t President Lincoln a Republican? Not that you hold any these views but many liberals, in general, do support and fight for these things, correct?
Well, mostly because it wasn’t my goal to make an extensive list but if I must answer for these as well then…
Legalized Abortion - Yup, already legal and should stay that way
Publically Funded Abortion - Yes because abortion itself is legal. The argument is usually that people don’t want their money being used for abortions but insurance companies already pay for abortions so either way your money is being used for it.
Legalized Homosexual Marriage - We need to get over our prejudices. Specifically making law to deny homosexuals of the rights that everyone else takes for granted is wrong. I thought we learned this lesson when we denied peoples rights because of their skin color.
Legalized Pornography - Free speech from my perspective, people can either choose to watch or ignore it. Keep an age limit on it like we have now and let parents police themselves and their kids. After all aren’t conservatives all about individual responsibility?
Legalized Protestation - Not sure what this is, do you mean prostitution?
Legalized Drugs - Most of them sure. Again, individual responsibility. We spend truck fulls of money on the war on drugs and all we end up doing is driving up the cost of drugs making drug cartels as powerful as nations. Anyone who is determined to get drugs is going to get drugs anyway.
Sympathy for Heinous Criminals - That’s a pretty broad statement. You’re going to have to be more specific as to what kind of sympathy you’re talking about here.
ACLU - Great organization. Not sure why conservatives hate them so much.
President Lincoln a Republican - Absolutely correct. And the other thing is that many republicans were considered liberals once upon a time. The republican party when it was created as a split away from the Whig Party. The republicans absorbed the democrats, various 3rd parties and ex-whig party folks which was the conservative party of the day. Republicans were the liberals of the day!
How things have changed. Now the republicans seem like the old whig party and democrats are wanna be republicans because they can’t seem to grow a sack and do what they say they will do.
This isn’t really a republican vs democrat thing from my perspective. Political parties change but conservatives and liberals have always been around demonizing the other side. What issues are hot buttons varies from time to time though.
Either way this is what being a conservative means to me - nothing happening or trying to go backwards in time.
I can apreciate alot of conservative views and even agree with alot of them but at the end of the day I’m a liberal. Conservatives just don’t make any sense to me and just seem really hypocritical and when I say this I’m talking about politicians more than the gneral populace because I obviously can’t go and find out what every conservative thinks. All I can do is go on the actions of the conservative leadership.
For example:
Small Government: Conservatives always go on about smaller government and less spending but I don’t hear alot about how to do that right now, all I see is lip service. This is a big country, big government is part of the package. With the amount of people we have there isn’t any such thing as small government.
Taxes: Every day I hear about lowering taxes. We need to raise taxes. Taxes are generally lower than they have been in a long time while spending has done nothing but gone up since 2000. Raising taxes isn’t popular but we’ve lowered taxes to the point of not being able to support the country. The next step of course is to blame President Obama for our enormous debt. And while I agree that he needs to start doing something about it, we were in this situation LONG before he was even a thought in anyones mind. Who’s administrations oversaw all of this debt? Reagan, Bush, and Bush Jr. which were so-called “conservatives” yet somehow all I hear about is how liberals are creating more debt. I don’t remember hearing many conservatives get all worked up like they are today between 2001 and 2009 when we were cutting taxes, paying for 2 wars and giving out corporate welfare in the form of Medicare Part-D.
This country was in ruins way before we had a Democrat in the white house these last couple years and I don’t even consider him a Liberal at all yet somehow it’s the liberals and democrats that are ruining the country? You’ve got to be kidding me. Honestly. Does everyone have that short of a memory that we forgot all the deregulation, all the tax cuts, all the corporate welfare, all the anti-union schemes, and all the jobs getting off-shored to other countries, all largely put in place by so called conservatives which in this case is the republican party and now we want to put them back in power again to do more of the same? I hear alot of complaining but I don’t hear alot of solutions.
Cut Spending, lower taxes, pay off the debt is what I pretty much hear but I don’t hear anything as to how. Paying off the debt means cutting spending but no one wants to cut anything. You can’t raise taxes because people think you’re trying to take all their money. You gotta pick one because you’re not doing it all.
