is Listening to heavy metal a sin ? or metal period?

i’ve been listening to bands like Slipknot, Slayer, & more i just wanna know is it ? i just can’t help it i love that stuff 😦
 
Perhaps this is a question of taste more than anything else.

What is it about the music you like exactly?

Is it the lyrics you think might be a problem? If so, they probably are a problem.

Perhaps others will not agree, but if you are looking for a simple black-white answer about sin, I don’t think it will be forthcoming.
 
I don’t consider it such, but I am a humble layman. I listen to Slayer, MetallicA, Megadeth, etc. I think we should view music with the analysis the Church Fathers viewed the art and works of the ancient Greeks. Some would not compare Metal to Aristotle, but to each his own.

i’ve been a wreck lately, i’ve been doubting god existing and other stuff, i don’t know i wanna be the old me again 😦 i’ve been looking at porn, masturbating, idk man am i in mortal sin? idk, 1 side wants me to believe in god and the other doesn’t 😦
 
If the lyrics are offensive to God, or enticing to sin, you must not listen to them.

If the music does either too, you must not listen to them.

There apparently is some ‘Christian Metal’ though I don’t know if it is adviseable both because of the music itself, regardless of the lyrics and because a person needs to not rely on music too much for his emotional life. If you listen to music it’s probably best for your health to listen to something sacred or classical, something peaceful.

Porn addiction is a serious problem that takes prayer and work to overcome. God wants to help you to do this. But to do it you *have *to get rid of the porn, and get rid of any near occasions of sin. Near occasions are the things that tempt you and are sure to have you to commit the sin, like magazines, shows, internet sites, etc. where you are tempted because of the way the people dress and act.

You must not sin in your mind or with your body, and love purity instead.

All sins of lust are serious sins, you *have *to overcome them. They can cause you to lose God forever.

The good news is God loves you and it can be done. You can win the fight and overcome the temptation. 🙂 And a life without it is a happier life, though the road to that happier life can be difficult, He is there to help you.

You need to love Him and yourself enough to overcome what is bad for you.
 
i just love that stuff, i’m a headbanger i love that stuff 🙂 most people think its “too loud” but its not to me 🙂 i heard the lead singer of slayer is catholic and he doesnt write that stuff
 
I can laugh at some of the stuff some Heavy Metal bands do, I used to laugh at Savatage’s ‘Hall of the Mountain King’, but others, it’s too far, and you just can’t allow it as it is disrespectful to the Lord.

The so-called ‘Black Metal’, etc.

It doesn’t matter how you feel about it, that has to change, you have to think about how He would feel about it.

I listened to Impellitteri for a bit, in the past, but don’t any more – they had a skilled guitarist and some nice soft pieces mixed in with all the heavy. I don’t recall offensive lyrics from what pieces I listened to, but I am hard of hearing so asking me to say what anyone is singing is rather silly, I make it a point to look up lyrics now however because even if I do not know what is being said, I want to know what is being said.

And nowadays I am trying to listen to almost entirely sacred and classical.

You can’t be a slave to the music.
 
idk, i’ve been like doubting god so much… i was almost a satanist before, idk why i just get these thoughts like is there a god? are there angels? are there demons? is there a angel named lucifer that became satan? i’ve just been having that so much idk man i use to say that i’d never doubt god existing i almost gave myself to the devil, am i in mortal sin? i’m not sure 😦
 
im a teenager but for the past 8 months i use to say satan was my god… i thought god hated me 😦 now, i’ve been thinking that god and satan dont exist 😦

I know He exists… many people do… It’s a certain thing. And we all find out for certain someday. 🙂 There’s a good deal of information here.

You’ve committed sins that can be mortal… But were you culpable fully or not? Only you can know. Or perhaps only God for now.

The best thing to do after such a thing is to repent those sins, to mean to not do them again and do your best no to do them again, and pray to God that repentance and contrition and determination, and ask for His help.

Then you go to Confession. But a prayer of contrition first. If it’s perfect, out of love of God for His own sake and you mean to go to Confession, you’ll be forgiven.

He doesn’t refuse to bring anyone home who’s willing to walk with Him on His way.

Satanism combined with Heavy Metal leaves a lot of stuff to overcome. . temptations that control your life… but with God all of these can be overcome and you can be free. 🙂 Freedom is a marvelous feeling let me tell you.

Do not be afraid to ask God for help. Until recently I always felt like I was not worthy and always asked Him to give my blessings to others more in need and more deserving. Over the years I did not take my faith seriously and only attended church mainly on Easter and Christmas. About a month ago my wife was beeing harrased in our house by a ghost, demon, bad spirit (what ever you want to call it). It was to the point where she was screaming and crying. I did not believe in stuff like that till it happened to us. I prayed and even though I knew the Our Father and Hail Mary they were all jumbled in words and phrases, it was like I had forgoten them. I kept praying and they started coming to me along with other prayers I havn’t heard in years. I told God I would be a better person and how sorry I was for my sins if He would make it go away. To make things short He did make it go away. And there has not been to many days since then He hasn’t been sending me signs He is there and loves me. I will never miss church again and neither will my wife who was raised with out a religion. This is a remakable story I plan to make a website on to share with others who may have doubts. So please believe me, God is there and does listen, I am living proof !!! May God Bless You !!!

I posted this is other forum but I kinda know where you are for I had several addictions, doubts and all that going on. Satan and demons are real and make a lot of things that are sins feel good. But let me tell you, there is nothing compared to the feeling of Gods love. Fully open your heart to His love and pray every morning for His guidence and you will be shown the way. Beeing a teenager is not easy these days, just don’t give up.

I grew up listening to Heavy Metal. Sometimes I used to even try to convince myself in my own mind that some heavy metal bands were on God’s side because their lyrics maybe mentioned God, right? I mean bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Candlemass mentioned religious stuff all the time.

I’m an old dude now in my 40’s, so nowdays I just look at things like popular music and TV and and I scowl the way Clint Eastwood did at his grandkids at the beginning of the movie Gran Torino when his grandkids were being disrepectful in church 😛 😉

But try to always keep this in mind as to how God wants you and me to really be–to be happiest in life–and then you be the judge if wether what you allow your eyes to see and your ears to hear gives golry to God:

p.s you might want to check out music by Beethoven. I like Beethoven a lot, I think his instrumentation was kind of ‘metal’ in its own way.

OP, you’re breaking my heart. I think that metal music with bad lyrics can definitely get into people’s heads and turn them to evil. I’d say you can listen to metal, just stick with Metallica or other bands that don’t go to the evil side. Slipknot is definitely evil. Throw out the Slipknot a.s.a.p.

God exists, Satan exists, evil spirits exists-- go researching exorcisms and you’ll know it’s true. The head Exorcist at the Vatican recently wrote a book (I saw him interviewed), and I wish I know the title to give to you. Read about people getting possessed by evil spirits, and God curing them, and you’ll never doubt again. You could also go research the apparitions of Mary-- you’ll see what the truth is and what side you need to be on.

PLEASE keep a Rosary (or a scapular or a St. Christopher’s medal) in your home to ward off evil thoughts. GOD BLESS YOU!!! Just the fact that you’re on this site shows that your conscience knows the truth… good for you coming on here!!!
 
Also, here’s a great site where you can read all about the Blessed Virgin Mary’s apparitions throughout the world. For people who need some sort of “proof” of God, I always bring these up. All of these people report the same message from the B.V. Mary: turn to Jesus and repent of your sins.

Satan does exist! One of his most clever tools is to make you think he and God don’t exist. By you feeling this way makes me want to think The Holy Spirit is trying to help you fight off Satin and his demons.

I suggest reading the Books of Proverbs, Wisdom, and Sirach. They will help you alot, then cap it of with the Book of Psalms.

Also pray to St. Michel for help and protection.:gopray:

Slipknot aren’t really metal.

Slayer mostly write “Satanic” lyrics because they’re interested in those types of things. It’s similiar to how an author like Stephen King would write about such a thing in a novel but not necessarily promote them himself. Tom Araya (Bassist/Singer of Slayer) was in fact raised Catholic, btw.

as Christians we are asked to do everything for the glory of Christ, and in a manner which glorifies and honors God.

does music about suicide, drug use, darkness, evil, despair, self-loathing, violence, and the Evil One glorify Christ, or remind us of Him?

Colossians 3:16 enjoins the Christian to sing Godly and pious songs to themselves in their hearts, and to remind one another of Godly things in all wisdom.

i also love Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Dire Straits, and CCR. but as a Christian, i know that music which does not honor and glorify Christ or God the Father are perhaps not songs i should be listening to, and reveling in. i know many may find that an annoyingly strict attitude, but my approach to music has changed a lot since coming to know and love Christ.

it is up to you. but consider the themes of the songs, what kind of worldview they teach, and what kind of values they convey. if these values and ideas are anti-Christian, they are certainly songs Christians should avoid.
 
a) that type of music for lack of a better word, sucks
b) the lyrics are filth…promoting every type of sin under the sun
c) that music is adopted and listened to by many satanists
d) i can’t understand a lot of what is being said, because the volume drowns out the words
e) would you want to be listening to it when Christ returns?
f) headbaning? For reall…headbanging??? I am sure you can find something more intellectually stimulating to do with your time.
