Is living together before marriage a sin?

Hello,

I am confused. I have gotten in an argument with my bf about cohabitating many times and i have always thought that it is a sin to live together before marriage. He states (according to wat ive thought about cohabitating) that its pointless and makes no sense.

I have talked to my friend who is super uber strong in his catholic faith and he told me that to his knowledge living together before marriage is not a sin as long as you are in seperate rooms and not sleeping together.

After thinking about it, i realize i am not completely sure about this belief. Is living together before marriage a sin if your not sleeping together?
I would think that it would make a lot more sense if it was only that sleeping together before marriage is a sin but living together is not. Help?!?!!
