It is in psychology. I used to have a very prestigious position as a research psychologist, but I traded it all for a contemplative lifestyle after reading about all the LOVE in the scriptures.

When was the last time you saw a thread on LOVE here in this forum?

LOVE! ❤️

I’m defining love as charity, in all its forms, which includes God Himself.

LOVE! ❤️

And how do you define “charity?”
Hi DAVE! The same way it is intended in the bible. I wish I could do better on a definition, but my intellect (and spirituality) often fails me.

LOVE! ❤️

Well, so far you’ve given us x=y, but until you tell us what you mean by y, we have no way of knowing what you mean by x. The word “charity” is part of that list of terms that I call “Catholic jargon,” meaning terms that everyone uses, but no one knows exactly what they mean. Another example is “ordered to.”

Edit: I’ll just add that if mushy feelings are involved, then I am in trouble, because I have some kind of a block in my personality that prevents my having any of those kinds of feelings.

Love was considered in philosophy long before Plato and Aristotle, who both had many writings. The Great Ideas Syntopicon by Enc Brit has impressive outlines of the greatest writers, and excellent specific references to Ss Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, although sadly the underlying focus is essentially agnostic, even atheist. I’m struggling with CSLewis’ Four Loves. I greatly admire almost everything by Lewis, but Four Loves is a challenge. Can anybody encourage us with some good quotations or other insight?

No, ‘mushy’ feelings are not what I had in mind, And, I should have said: “Is LOVE under studied in philosophy today?” How can philosophy ignore one of the most basic experiences as depicted in the bible? Are philosophers today barking up the wrong trees?

I get the feeling that modern minded folks consider love to be just a chemical reaction in the brain. If that were true there wouldn’t be any need for philosophy to get involved as it is for the neuro scientists to work it out.

It’s wrong of course since you love when a child is born, you love when they do something wrong, you love when they are injured, you love when you are not even thinking about them. I’d bet there is a different chemical involved in each case but all involve love

Capital (L)ove is a whole different thing though and modern philosophers have no use for God anymore.

Considering that so many people think love is an emotion, I think it’s quite understudied / not understood in general.

Acts of love, is how love exists.

LOve has many expressions. there is agape love, there is fraternal love, there is erotic love and there is the theological Virtue of Love. In the emotion of human love there are two elements, feeling, and thought never just feelings. thought involves knowledge.
There is the human love affair. One is attracted to the opposite sex, the female is gifted with natural beauty, which attracts the male, then there is the desire to know the one attracted to, when knowledge is acquired, then there is a desire to find acceptance in order to acquire.possession , which leads to union and it blessings. This is much like the Virtue of Love (Charity) and this is endowed by Jesus Christ when we give our lives to Him and follow His teachings, it is the Love of God, working in our lives to unite us with Him. the Holy Spirit is the personification of the love the Father has for the Son, and the Son for the Father. The Holy Spirit, the Love of God, is transforming us, moulding us into the likeness of Christ.

We are attracted to God by His love for us, which causes our love for Him, He reveals His beauty, His majesty, His generosity, His caring, His security His goodness We then seek to be united with Him and Him with us. We must first come to know Him, in knowing Him we come to love Him, The Holy Spirit of truth give us knowledge of Him, its’ contained in our faith, a faith of enlightenment, the truth. It is a supernatural gift of Faith, another Cardinal Virtue, as we can’t attain full union is this life, His love for us endows us with an eternal promise of union by the Cardinal Virtue of Hope… When we are united with Him completely Faith and Hope will vanish and only Love will remain, Union!
